I was detailing the kat today and I started it up to drive it off the ramps. I got out, moved the ramps and then got down behind the car clean around the trans cooler when I heard this deep tone sound. It was coming from the exhaust pipe. But the engine was not running! Has anyone ever experienced this. Do the converters make a noise when they heat up? It slowly died away. Strange.

dumb question but, you sure it wan't your back making the deep groaning sound, or perhaps even your stomach if it were around the dinner hour?

Gary, I bought rhino ramps today to take off the stock muffler. The car was cold, in the garage and I backed it onto the ramps and turned it off. It was running for 15 seconds. I was in the back of the car and heard a noise I had never heard but with the cicada racket, I was having a problem isolating it. I put my ear by the exhaust tip and I heard what you heard. Over 5 years and I had never heard it until about 10 PM this evening. I wanted to adjust my park job so I moved the car back about 8 or 10 inches and when I listended then, no noise.
I have no clue what it is.

Thanks Ed, that's about how long mine was running and it was cold also. At least I know it's not just mine so it must be something 'normal'?

Ray, No, the back has a noise similar to a door hinge when it needs oil and the stomach like a mean dog.

Not to change the subject Ed but how hard to remove the muffler after 5 years. Was there enough room under the car when on the ramps?

Could it have been the transmission fan running? Don't know if it will cycle on since it's electric or not. But I have heard mine come on before. T

Tami, that was my first thought but it was coming out of the tailpipe, for sure.
Jan, you cannot believe the havoc they are now causing. Smelly and very loud and getting into everything.
Gary, I was appraising the situation for when I do remove the muffler. That is now on hold so absolutely no work was performed (which I am extremely capable of accomplishing. The NO work part, I mean).
It is on the Candy that has about 2000 miles on it, not the 99 Red.
