I have read many different scams lately on the board, for people selling cars from overseas etc. Someone indicated that they may be using the POA membership list to send scams out also, I am not blaming anything on the POA, just know that there are people out there who use large membership lists to send spam out. Well, I just received e-mail that indicates I have won a huge amount of money from a International Lotto. All I have to do is call or email a guy named MR. McCoy and he will then deposit my winnings into any account I direct it to. What a bunch of crap. Has anyone else received the same thing? Don't be so hard on the POA. If you have given your email address to anyone, anywhere, ordered anything online, signed up for anything online, etc., your email address is out there. Mike doesn't sell the list of members. He is probably one the most honest and trustworthy folks I know and trust me, he doesn't need the cash! LOL! But, that is not to say someone couldn't just take the time to look at each member's profile and see what there email address is (of course, they can do this with any website). I typically block or don't show mine hence, I get alot less junk mail. I also only use disposable accounts (hotmail, yahoo, etc.) for my interests. Get too much junk? Dump the account and create a new one. |

There are programs called "harvesters" and the person using it goes to any website and it literally pulls every email address located anywhere on the site. As Yellow Fever says, it's good to have a"junk" email to use for non important things. We don't keep an email list of everyone, and we would never sell it or the access to get it. I do keep a snail mail list, but only for our use. |

If you use outlook and a couple of other mail programs, most viruses are written to look for the contact lists. If you are in anyone's contact list that has a virus, you can be proxied as the originator of a virus. Same goes to the mass spamming. Addresses may not only be a virus target. Spammers can get a couple of cents per spam in some cases. You can be a lotto winner and help a general get a large amount of money out of his country while receiving 10% of the loot. Anything that asks for any contact info via email is a scam, pure and simple. Also be sure to keep track of any websites that you may use card information and such on. They can be hijacked. |

Got 3 of those things yesterday and one today. Sent them all back with my claim for the money. Shouldn't be too long, and I'll be able to kick back nice and comfy like. |

Not sure who the guy is or how he knows me, but he sure knows my email address and how to get in touch with me! I sent him all that bank stuff he needs to get me set up for the cash transfer. I am living the American dream! |

Well, even though everyone *expects* to get spam in this day and age, it very well may be the result of how POA's board are set up. If you haven't noticed, each post on the discussion board has that nice "mail" icon at the top of the post. If you mouse over it in your browser, you can see it's got a nice "mailto:" URL in it containing the e-mail address you used to register your POA discussion board account. There's no type of trickerly, even something simple as replacing the @ symbol with a textual " at " instead. Any time a website exposes your e-mail address in its "pure" form, a spam harvester (a computer program that scours the web looking for e-mail addresses) will pick it up and you will most likely be getting spam at that address in a few weeks. Some spam harvesters are even getting clever now to the point where your spam may look like it's coming from POA, or even as a personal message from someone else whose e-mail address is also exposed on the POA message board. I've set up several online forums and message boards myself (I am not responsible for POA) and have had to go through great lengths to ensure that e-mail addresses aren't exposed on the site through mailto links or else the posters get inundated with spam. Spam bots are incredibly effective these days. The best advice I can think of for avoiding spam is to set up your own private e-mail account and only give the address to trusted people to send you mail. There's a reason why my registered e-mail address here is "spam@". The good thing is that POA has private messaging capability. Chances are a private message on the POA board is coming from another poster or concerned citizen and not some random Russian trying to sell you knockoff Viagra ed |

quote: Hopefully, your joking but, if true, you've just added your email list to probably a whole host of spammers lists. NEVER, NEVER, respond to emails like that and NEVER send reply to ANY "take me off your list by clicking here" emails. Once you have done so, they know your email address is legit and will dump tons of spam on you and sell your address over and over again..... |

I got another Nigerian lawyer this week who says he tracked me down with my last name. One of my relatives died and he wants to deposit the money in my bank acct. I told him to send me a bank check, my acct is so full now i don't have room for 12 million in there!! ------------------ |

LOL. yeah, no criticism of the POA or the board was intended here either. It's a good thing to note that the e-mail features can be disabled as well...I hadn't been aware of that myself! Any poster who's really "spam sensitive" should disable it Oh yeah, if that Nigerian needs some Viagra, let me know. I think I can assemble a network of, oh, about 400 independent suppliers. We can corner the Nigerian Viagra market in an instant with that much pricing flexibility . ed |
