in my Dec. Solidarity magazine this month had a shot from Claude McKee in Wittman, AZ of what looks like a Black Prowler left out in the night air and covered with Frost.

does any of the AZ owners know this person?

it is titled "Mother Nature's Artwork 1"

Ed, I'd rather see A/C pulling out chain instead of trying to push chain. That's difficult.

cool pic.....

We don't have an owner in the town of Wittmann AZ, that I am aware of. Since I am not that familiar with all the cities of Arizona, I did a little research. Turns out, Wittman is the home of Daimler Chrysler's Arizona Proving Grounds. It is about 35 miles northwest of Phoenix.

Despite what most of you think, the open desert gets pretty darn cold in the winter.

Some interesting links - one with prowler info:

this was summitted to the Mag. by a UAW member of LOCAL 509, it could very well be a car at the proving grounds.

Thanks Debbie for the info

Larry.....there are proving grounds as far south as Tucson. One of our prowler owners, Jim Marsella, actually works out at one of them - I think the Volkswagon grounds.

Larry - never heard of him, but that doesn't mean he doesn't exist here??? Yes, it does get very cold at night, at times during the winter months. In 28 yrs here, I've seen 18 degrees once,,,,but several nites in the 20's. Bbuuuurrrrrrr

What you see in that picture is possible here, but very rare.

Debbie is correct about Jim Marsella (aka, Prowlrman - who owns a Black Tie). Jim is the Audi - VW Proving Grounds Manager of their facility at Maricopa, Az. He also spends alot of time traveling for them. LOVES his Prowler!

Hey...I see you guys are talking about me! Yes I am the manager of the VW Arizona Proving Grounds located near Maricopa. There are 6 major test tracks within 50 miles of Phoenix. VW, Nissan, GM, Volvo, Toyota, and yes, Daimler Chrysler. It is true it is located near the town of Wittman. I have had the privilege of visiting all of these tracks. Total vehicle development is done at the facilities around town from Durability testing, Corrosion testing, ride and handling, Weathering, hot weather testing and so on...

My guess is that Prowler could have been sitting in a cold test chamber, as I don't think we have had that cold of weather here so far this year, but it is true that we do occasionally get COLD out here in the desert!

Madmax and everyone else: The days of the old 4 cylinder air cooled engines are a thing of the past for VW. We build cars that easily exceed 150 mph in the VW line up (New Phaeton...12 cylinder...420 hp / 450 lbs-ft torque..0-60 in 5.9 seconds...175 mph top speed! I know this for a fact as I have driven it at that number!) and our new Touareg will have a twin turbo diesel engine introduced in the spring with 330 hp and a whopping 530 lbs-ft torque. The Touareg will do everything a Hummer H2 can do and with style, comfort and great looks. I actually had a chance in the fall to visit the GM Milford Proving Grounds and ride in an H2 on their severe off road course. I also have a severe off road course at the APG, and I can tell you first hand I'll put a Touareg up against an H2 any day of the week in an off road situation...and come out on top. Don't forget we also own Audi and Bentley, along with Lamborghini, and believe it or not, all of those vehicles are powered by VW designed engines...16 cylinder beasts with 500 + hp and 4 second 0-60 speeds. And by the way, a large part of the Porsche SUV development was done at my facility...for those who don't know that the Porsche Cayenne is really a VW platform underneath! The smart investment if someone wants a Porsche Cayenne is to buy a Touareg V-8 for $42,000 and take the left over $25,000 and buy a used Prowler!

We may not build a car that has the looks of a Prowler or a Viper, but you would be surprised at a stop light by one of our "sleepers" that quite frankly will give you a run for your money!

Well said Jim,,,,I knew you would blast 'em in the as$!

I'm sure MadMax was just tugging on your chain for a reaction. Don't take it personal.

Claude McKee indeed works at the DC Proving Grounds in Arizona. He does a lot of photography work and has won DC's Artist's at Work program more than once. The last thing he won was with the photo for a yellow Prowler. I would guess that this is an old photo shot in '98 or '99 based upon the black '99 in the photo. He sent CJ a copy of the last winning photo to frame plus a copy of the art exhibit brochure with it in it. He is very talented. It's nice to see him recognized for his work.

Geno..."WE" is Volkswagen. VW owns the following automobile companies: VW, Audi, Skoda, SEAT (pronounced SAY YAT), Bentley, Lamborghini, and the one I forgot to mention previously...Bugatti. The Bugatti Veryon, the 16 cylinder, 975 hp supercar coming out next spring also has a VW designed engine. I personally know the head engineer responsible for the development of the engine. It's a beauty!! VW also owned Rolls Royce until it was turned over to BMW last year.

A/C: I know MAX was pulling my chain abit, and nothing was taken personal, he's one of my favorite Prowler owners, and I still think his car is the one of the best looking Prowlers running the streets of Phoenix!

Jim - OK,,,,let's not build up MadMax's ego too much,,,,it's to the point that we can't find a hat to fit him now, LOL.
