What can I expect to gain by removing exhaust baffles. Sound? Performance? |

I pulled my baffles out about a month ago and was disappointed. The difference in the exhaust note is very slight. In fact it is barely noticeable. I put rivets back into the holes to make it look whole again. It does look nicer though. I'm looking forward to hearing some of the other alternatives available, when I get to Pigeon Forge. I'm told we'll have all kinds of different exhaust systems there. |

Thomas, et al, The exhaust performance gains are a combination of flow through from the exhaust manifold to the tips. Improve the exhaust flow (i.e.less restriction) and gain performance (and as Marty knows) and sound resonance increases. Read prior posts on this. Optimal setup: Exhaust headers, H -or- X pipes, remove catback system, SSS muffler or equal flow-thru system, remove baffles = 10-30 HP. My setup is just the SSS muffler and removed baffles = 10-12 HP gain. This concept applies to the top-side air flow (i.e. Magic Touch Designs air intake and bypass = 5-10 HP gain) for more low-budget combinations. see you guys at the Smokies! I did the MTD 2.2 intake, removed the baffles, and reset the computer at the same time. As a result, I can't give a breakdown of each individual piece. The total, however, is slightly quicker response to the gas pedal and moderately better sound. I also did not like the looks of the baffles. I consider this very good bang for the buck. I recommend at least pulling the baffles and resetting the computer. The reset is accomplished by disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes and then driving aggressively for the next 50 miles with the A/C on. -GRROWL This message has been edited by GRROWL on 08-12-2003 at 04:26 PM |

For $750 I got the Mopar/ made by Borla Cat back system. Nice rumble but quiet at speed. I also have the MTD 2.2 intake, but be careful, the cone intake can seperate. I hear Jay Harris's SSS muffler made a lot of people happy too. Go to an event and listen to the different exhaust notes and pick which floats your boat. But what do I know, I'm just a POA poser and these are all poser mods...right? |
