Had the lower ball joints replaced on recall yesterday (the old ones looked brand new). The dealership broke center cap tangs on the passenger side taking the wheel off (lost the center cap on the way home).

Lithia Chrysler on Arapahoe road says the center cap is on: "Galactic Back-Order". Does anyone have any idea when DC plans on a replenishing an exhausted stock of the cheesiest most over priced part ever made by ANY manufacturer of all times?

Chromer.

Had my Prowler in last week for recall .Same thing happened to me,they broke my center caps.I had enough pull to make them order 4 under warranty to replace mine. They didn't say anything about backorder but they did not come from there local warehouse they shipped out of a second source.I just gave them the hot glue treatment I read about in the archives hopefully these won't break. Maybe you should try another dealer.Good Luck !!!

When I made an appointment for the recall, I called the parts dept and asked how many center caps they had in stock. None. I informed the guy about the recall and that many caps will be broken and he might want to order a few. When I arrived for my appointment, I was informed that they had forgotten to order the parts! I think I'll try a different dealer.

Richard and anybody else, I suggest you carefully remove the center caps yourself before going to the dealer.

Seems to me like TGF ought to be able to design and make a solid metal center cap to replace the plastic one we now are forced to suffer with. It would have metal snaps that would not break when the center cap is taken off. They could sell it through Real Rod just like they do their other parts.

Goodness, they could make a small fortune selling these. Wouldn't everyone but a complete set of four? Even if they were a little pricey? Especially if it might be the first and only set you would ever have to buy since the snaps would no longer break off. And AC could lend his "stamp of approval", for a $10 fee of course.

Just a wild and crazy thought.

Last Monday had my ball joints replaced also.
Dealer broke both centers, and replaced the both.
Service tech said they look like new.
He said all the joints he has changed look Ok
Their is a fix for the center caps
Take a hot glue gun and run a bead of glue down the back side of the tab to stiffen it up. Then put a small film of grease on the front of the tab that rubs the rim . This will help slip the cap on and off. Seems to work.

I had my ball joints fixed on the 11th. When i arrived they said they had an extra four center caps just in case!!!I glued mine months ago with construction grade glue. It works great-(Clear-Liquid nails). Didn't need any new ones. Have four just in case at home.

I took my car in yesterday for the ball joints to be replaced and before they took the car in for surgery, I removed the caps and stored them in the trunk, they are still there too, Dale (Prowler tech) was so fast at changing the ball joints I didn't have time to clean the wheels after taking them to get balanced check at place that sent them out an chromed them 4 years ago. So I still need to clean the wheels up and reinstall the center caps.

I would recommend anyone that takes their car in to remove the caps themselves or make sure they have extras for you. Maybe DC should have added 2 center caps in the recall parts box so no one goes away unhappy with broken parts

I will use the detail spray I use on the car to lube the caps before reinstalling. once they are on I can wipe off the excess spray and have shiney wheels

I took mine in for the ball joints, never even mentioned the center caps, when I went back the dealer had replaced the two because he said he broke one and the other I had fixed with the glue fix.

Bob - when my car goes to your dealer be sure they break (and replace) at least the front cap on the passenger side. It already has a broken tab, but I have not repaired yet.

I took mine in and took my old center caps (which I had fixed with the hot glue and were fine now)off and put them in a baggie on the passenger side floor. I talked with the Parts Manager about this problem and he said he would get me 4 new caps. I ask him to put the new caps in on the floor also so I could hot glue them before using. He didn't have a problem with that. When I picked the car up both bags of center caps were on the passenger floor. I put the old caps (FIXED ONES!) on and took the new caps home and did the hot fix on them. I now have a brand new (Modified so they will work!) set of center caps in case I need them. Doesn't get any better than this!

With the hot glue treatment, I had no problem with the caps coming on or off. I let them do it since I feel the caps are bulletproof after this treatment.

I had no problem....

The only way it could get better for others is if there weren't a lot of people out there hording all the center caps!

There are actually people that REALLY NEED one.

Chromer - sounds like your dealer is the one with the problem. One of the other local Prowler owners had one break and was replaced by dealer with no problem. Have you tried checking with other dealers?

Having several dozen POA members keeping one or two extras doesn't sound like "hording" to me. Besides, you could always pay some high school kids to appropriate some for you from Alex's car.

Guess I'm answering my own post? (Less the bravdo about having more center caps than I need).

There are 177 center caps on National "backorder". The supplier will be furnishing DC 469 center caps on or about May 2nd.
What is that metaphor?.... Something about.. "first..to the troft..?" Oink, Oink!

Chromer - email or message me your address. I will send you a center cap from my stash of two I bought from the classifieds a couple of weeks ago to replace my broken one. I don't get my car back from Wisconsin for another week or so anyway. You can send it or a your new one back new me when you get it.
