Hi there!
I'm toying with selling my Black '99 factory standard 29,000 miles Prowler. I see wildly differing prices out there. Does anyone reading this have a good sense of a "fair" price for something like this? Should I sell privately or go to a dealer?
All thoughts and opinions welcomed :O)

Thanks!

Mike

Realistically, your car probably is worth high teens to 20K wholesale, low to mid twenties retail.
Unfortunatly there are a lot of low milage '99s for sale and a reletively high milage Prowler won't be scooped up that quickly.
Sorry for the bad news, but I think that this is a fact of life.

Unfortunately, dealers say the blue book price is way too high when they buy and way too low when they sell. I suggest sell retail on E-bay, newspaper, trading post. May take awhile.

CJ, you have my vote to go with NADA. Should help compensate for a lot of the negativity and low-balling that usually goes on around here.

I always base my thinking on values from the NADA guidelines. Edmunds figures are somewhat fair, but Kelly book prices are crap. The problem when it comes to the dealer's standpoint, is that they will figure 75-80% of low book figure. This leaves them room for detailing, time it takes to sell, and floorplan charges.

To answer your question Mike, you need to retail it yourself to get the most $$$. You will have to spend some time and money (cleaning daily and advertising) to make the most of it.

High retail is $44K? When I have found new 2001's for mid $30's and bought a new 2002 for $38K.

In my dealings with selling and buying cars, dealers rarely follow NADA or Kelley. Typically, they use whichever is quoting less and then take another 20-30% off the wholesale price.

Wholesalers offere even less and since most people don't know wholesalers, your friendly dealer is the only way to go. That dealer is probably going to just flip it to a wholesaler but, have the deal set so they make 10-15% for their effort (a phone call).

I would suggest listing it in eBay for $5K (with a reserve of whatever you want it to be , say $38K). The low start price would get a number of people to bid on it. If the bid price doesn't get to your $38K price, you are not obligated to sell it. But, let's say the price gets up to $30K, you could then call the high bidder and tell them you would sell it to them for that price (if you wanted to).

Good Luck

Hiya!
I just wanted to thank each and every one of you for your replies.
They were all helpful and gave me a real good heads up about what to expect and why, along with my various options.

If I CAN keep a hold of my kat I shall be very happy. I think I shall know very soon.
Thanks again,
Mike

YellowFever...........I didn't say this was gospel, I just posted the info on the NADA site.

Not all dealers are selling their in-stock Prowlers for the prices you are quoting.

Again, as a dealer here, NADA books are just "guidelines", nothing more. They seldom have a clue on what very limited production cars are worth and are many months behind the curve.
This comment is from many years of experience. My above pricing statement stands.

CJ< true, but what are those dealers BUYING their kats for? No one can get close to an over priced dealer price but them. Kat's are rare, yes, but so are buyers. They are only worth what one can get in THEIR market.

Absolutely NO offense meant towards you JRL, but Prowler history has shown that most dealers.......

1. Gouged the consumer with the prices they asked for the cat (especially the first year and still do). Which is why the dealers still have them. I firmly believe that one of the reasons Prowler was cancelled early was because the dealers were complaining that they couldn't sell them. Never mind the fact that they were asking way too much money for the carsand brought that on themselves!
2. Really knew and know nothing about the Prowler
3. Didn't care (didn't get it) about the Prowler as a specialty vehicle (just what they could get for it)

true, but that's most dealer's selling almost anything everywhere. They are business for money, not love of product.

In the dealings that I have had with dealers, the give your the price that they can wholesale the car for regardless of the blue book or any other book. There always seems to be a reason why they give you so little, market is not right, ecomany is slow, sun is to hot!! This is whether they have a buyer in there back pocket or not. All you can ever do is either sell it out yourself for whatever you feel is fair or trade with a dealer for the BEST price that you feel you can live with or without... The final decision is always yours. Good luck with your decision.

Mike,

How have you been? You changed your email address a while back and I dropped from my distribution list.

Send me an email and I will put you back on the list.

Hope all is going well with you and we've missed you and Kenny on our cruises.

Phil
