Today for the 4th time I've had a belt either fall off or twist. This time I noticed it because my A/C went off while I was driving. And it's HOT right now. So I decided to look under the hood and sure enough the ac compressor belt fell off. So right now I'm trying to get them to buy the car back. I'm not going to keep a lemon. I've had the car 7 months and all this headache. So anyway I won't be a Prowler owner much longer. =(

It happened twice before I put the gears on. Once with them on. I just took them off and it happened again with them off. It's not the gears.

I am not sure that they will buy your car back because of that problem. That sounds fixable. They bought my first prowler back with 1,500 miles on it when the engine let loose at 900 miles and then again at 1,500 miles. Chrysler was great about resolving my problem and it took just around 30 days to resolve the buy back. As I have posted before I now own a great yellow prowler. It has even made it past the 1,500 mile mark without any complaints. I know how mad you must feel as I was boiling mad to have my oil plug pop out of the back of the engine and to lose all of the oil while idling down my street. The engine locked up and I coasted into my drive with a path of oil following me. Chrysler even paid for resurfacing my driveway because the hot oil took care of my blacktop. If you love your car as I did my first prowler then take a deep breathe and let the dealership work at finding a solution to this dilemma. Yes, it will take some time and patience, but look how much fun it will be again once it is fixed. On the first one Chrysler even gave me then extended warranty to help me out, which is very expensive since it was the 7 year 70,000 mile warranty and not the drive train one that they brag about on the television. Good luck and if they do buy your car back then do what I did and get another one in a different color.

Wow, I'm glad to hear someone else has been able to sell their car back. From what I understand, if it's a safety issue 9 out of 10 times they'll buy it back. Belts falling off to me is a safety issue. May not sound like much but consider this. I lost my power steering going into a turn with oncoming traffic. If I didn't know the belt was off or know any better I could keep driving it with no water pump and overheat the car. Which in turn can permanently damage the engine. The only way I can see them fixing this is by replacing the engine itself. The pulley mounts are burried in there and if they keep falling off when the alignment is to spec then something is seriously a miss. They're reviewing the car now to determine whether or not they'll buy it back. I've had a terrible month and just pray to god this goes smoothly and without headache.

I think that from what you have said that there will be a way of resolving this issue. Just in case they do buy the car back you need to have all receipts for the purchase of the car,any receipts for any accessories that can't be taken off of the car and transferred to a new car, your receipts with what you paid for your license plate(s) and if you have a loan other than thru Chrysler the balance on the car. You won't be dealing with Chrysler on this transaction. Chrysler will turn it over to a mediations company out of Texas and they were great to deal with on my case. I really couldn't be mad at them since they had nothing to do with my car other then to get my money back and that is their job. This company handles other car companies besides Chrysler.
So this is how it worked for me and I was so mad when the engine cut loose that you would not have wanted to be around me for days. Imagine how mad you could be when here it was Memorial Day and your first time off in weeks and the fun that I was going to have on that day cruising down to southern Indiana to enjoy the nice day when after just going to my store to do the morning work and coming home when all of a sudden there was a pop and smell of hot oil followed by smoke and all of the neighbors watching me coast into my drive with an oil trail following me. I was embarrassed, puzzled and so mad because I had to get this car out of my drive because it was oiling everything. I had to visit my pet store and get four bags of cat litter to soak up the oil and then clean that up and call the customer service hot line to get a flat bed wrecker to get this car out of my drive. It was terrible and then I went in on the Chrysler website and wrote a very nasty letter that I had to wait about three days for an answer to. I was very nice to the lady on the phone when they finally called me back even though I was a mad man inside. Yelling at her I knew was not going to get anything solved and as I said before after waiting about 30 days I got a new car the day after I signed over the papers for the one without an engine. By the way Chrysler didn't do any leg work on that. I found a dealer with a 2002 Yellow one and I bought it on my own after the old one was paid off. It is not Chryslers' responsibility to find you another car or to work on a price for the new one. That is your job and what you pay for it is between you and the dealer. The funny thing was that I paid less for my 2002 then I paid for my 2001 Mulholland Blue one.
Now that I have rambled on I hope this gets you some insight as to what takes place and I do sympathize with you on the safety issue.
Good luck and keep me informed as to how it goes on down the road with the dealer and Chrysler.

Thanks for the info Denis. I appreciate it. Luckily the dealership is the only place I've taken my car to to get worked on. They've agreed to print out all of the records for me as to what was done on the car and when. I'm also financed through Chrysler so that's another headache relieved. But it's been 2 days and I haven't heard from them. They haven't even offered me a rental car for all of the days I am without my car. Do they reimburse you for this or should I press them for a rental now?

Chrysler offered and gave me a new chief cherokee from my dealer to drive until they figured out what they were going to do. Then up until they bought my car back I had this cheorokee to drive and turned it back in the day that the paperwork was signed. Just be patient and don't expect the zone manager that gives the okay on the buy back to be rushing over to see your car. They never seem to be in your area when you need him. First I talked with Chrysler then I talked to my dealer and they setup for the zone manager to come by and look at my car. It was not Chrysler in Detroit that did that.

Keep me informed, Denis

Talked with them today. Apparently they were aware of this problem for awhile now. Amazing it hasn't been recalled yet. They said this problem is happening on quite a few Prowlers. They say when you go over a certain RPM, they didn't say exactly but the dealership was guessing 5000rpms the belts fall off. That's some great design eh. How can they know this and not have a recall on the cars. They didn't offer a solution to fix it either. So I'm guessing they don't know how. They only said a gator belt would help out. Problem is the dealership doesn't stock any of those. I don't think that's a solution anyhow and I'm going to prove it when they give me my car back. They're still working on a buy back but want to give me the car back until they decide. Should I take the car back in an unsafe condition such as this or demand them give me a rental and buy the car back asap?

You seem determined to get rid of your Kat. I understand your problem and it is a serious one, but I would think there is something that can be done to remedy it. Is it that the car just is not what you thought it would be? I think we all know these cars arent going to hold up as well as a regular production car. Every car is going to have some gremlins that pop up. The Vipers are the same way from what I hear. Right as I hit 5k miles mine seemed to suddenly turn into a rattle trap. But I took my time and located them and personally fixed all of the rattles. I love this car. It took me a long time to get one and I'm keeping it. I wish you good luck with your situation. Hopefully you will get the result you want. Keep us all posted!

I think that I'd take the car back and drive it if they have replaced the belt. If in your own mind the car is that unsafe then ask for a loaner and wait until the area rep comes in and go from there. This is a hard one to call and since I am just a bystander that has had a similar but yet not similar problem then I can understand where you are coming from. If you choose to not drive it and it is at the dealership and the issue as you said is a safety issue I think that they should give you something to drive until the problem is resolved. If you were 5,000 miles from home they would give you a car to drive and even if the dealer is only 5 miles from home they should offer the same as they did for me.What I think is strange is that your car from reading the posts is the first that I have heard of this problem with, but then again I don't read all of the posts and if you miss a few days then you might miss a few posts. Once again keep me informed as to what is happening.
