Yeah interesting article but this is the concept version. Chevy has already settled for less HP, less Torgue = less peformance. Not to mention 1000 lbs of additional weight and at least a 1 inch higher ride height on the production version of the SSR. A stock Prowler will smoke this thing 0-60, in the 1/4 mile , on the skid pad and in the slolam. The only thing the SSR has that the Prowler lacks is cargo capacity and the V8 sound. I like the SSR but GM has missed the boat much worse the Chrysler did by not putting in a V8. Oh yeah the estimate sticker price is now increased by appox. $8,000 as well. No Thanks I 'll keep my V6 Prowler. I am anxiuous to see how the Car publication focus on the production SSR's shortcomings as compared to the original stats as much as they did on the Prowlers performance. |

Spoons, Thank you for posting this. The article certainly validates my last post on this subject. Exactly what I was saying. They can't introduce and evaluate the SSR without trying to discredit the Prowler first. Why can't this vehicle just stand on its own merit? I'll tell you why, because the Prowler stunned the automotive world like no other American car ever has (except maybe the Viper)and they want desperately to find a way to overcome that. So far they are so short of hitting the mark that they feel they must try to lower what they are shooting at. Good luck. SSR's beware, Prowlers will be looking for you when you hit the street! ------------------ |

AutoWeek always posts **** crap articles about cars. They call my Hummers outdated and slow, the Prowler inadequate, etc.... They forget that every vehicle has a target market. If the writer loves Honda Civics then a Hummer or Prowler probably aint for him. |

Yeah, well, they are just jealous they (GM and Ford) weren't the ones to do something like that first. I had a LOT of guys talk to me at the roadshow display and whisper that they were GM or Ford employees and wished that they could have one!! |

A/C-- Just remember to remove the staples first, and by the way, that darn "high gloss" paper really is a bit too slick for butt wipe, bit the idea's sound! |

GUESS WHAT? This month's Car & Driver (the issue with Dr. Ru) previews the SSR and it will have a 0-60 time of 7.5 seconds at best! The sample cars weighs a piggy 3,600 lbs, and they expect the actual production vehicle to weigh as much as 4,100 lbs!!! Just like BeWare said.....A stock Prowler will EMBARRASS the SSR on any strip or streetlight! So ......UP YOURS AUTO WEEK! This message has been edited by Black Tie 161 on 09-19-2002 at 07:15 AM |

Thanks Harry, I knew I could depend on you for a strong stance on my idea I was thinking, I could use a pair of needle-nose pliers to yank the staples out of my butt. |

Now let’s give the GM exec a little space here. After all the article says : Today, Welburn's star has risen to where he wears the weighty mantle of Director of GM's Corporate Brand Character Center. That means he's in charge of making sure Buicks look like Buicks and Pontiacs like Pontiacs and, of course, that Chevys look like Chevys. I think the man should be able to say whatever he wants to try and make people forget about his previous “success” like the Aztek! ------------------ |

I read the whole artical, I really like the truck but how can they compare a car to a truck. Their comment on the front seats what with that, can u imagine a prowler with a bench seat yah right. The howler they never really compared those to I wonder how they would actually stack up against each other, that would be interesting. PK |

EVERYbody has their own opinions on cars, fashion, religion, politics, beauty, etc. Autoweek has had people write good things about the Prowler and not so good things. The same holds true for most any other car. I read their articles as well as other publications knowing that the writers can slant the article most any way the want. I am most happy owning what I believe to be the "coolest" production car ever made. Obviously with the modifications I have made, I was not quite satisfied with the stcok version, but I am SO thankful Chrysler produced them. I am sure the SSR will appeal to a niche market as well; just not me. Bench seat - NOT, V8 - would have liked one but gears and nitrous are pretty darn fast. Storage space - I don't golf and the Prowler trailer adds space AND more cool to a cool car! SSR will have things the Prowler doesn't but I certainly will not be trading my KAT for one. ------------------ Driving my Dream |

I asked Kevin Wilson (Autoweek Writer) why Car Magazine always rag on the Prowler, but praise the SSR and T-bird... this is Kevin's Response: "If all AutoWeek cared about was 0-60 times, your argument would be closer to correct, but we are far from praising T-Bird at every turn (we've said it's a big fat cruiser with poor body rigidity, and that it's disappointing, at least a couple times now) or SSR, which we haven't driven in production form yet (no one has) and about which we've mostly said it is a good thing for Chevy to be doing (just like the first Prowler was a good thing for Chrysler to be doing, even though it was nowhere near the performance numbers you cite for the last model). I'm glad you like Prowler; personally, I wouldn't own one. It handles weird, it should have a V8, and not enough people wanted it even to keep it in low production because to most folks the looks and performance aren't worth the sacrifices in utility that it demands. If I wanted a rod, I think I'd build one my way for that kind of money. But then, I'm not a rodder or dragstrip kind of guy; I have different priorities. If what you want is to get to 60 mph in under 6 seconds and the looks get you excited, you've made the right choice. That's why there are hundreds of cars on the market. If everybody liked the same thing, the street would look mighty boring. |
