Saturday I logged into Prowleronline and viewed the discussion board for about 45 minutes, logged off, and shut my computer off, like I always do. Sunday I turned it on, it booted up as normal, but after the desktop loaded, the hard drive ran (hard) for about 5 more minutes. I browsed for awhile and again shut down the computer as usual. Today I started it up, and got an error that it cannot find my operating system. Prowleronline is the only site that I have been on in the last week. My guess is VIRUS. I have been online for over 4 years, and have never seen anything like this! This will be my last posting. I have only been a member of this site for 2 1/2 weeks. I have had a wonderful time reading and learning about our new toy. I will check this site from time-to-time, from someone else's computer, but NOT mine. Thanks you all for the warm welcomes, and all the info. Tom |

My sys admin at work wanted to know how I was doing since I was receiving SO MANY virus emails. I've seen many of your user ids/email addresses in many of the emails (that all have attachments). I use McAfee Anti Virus software at home and work, and I have it set up to update the virus files and run virus checks every night. That's kept me safe so far, but I agree that POA got hit by something that is spawning many, many virus laden emails to members. Mike |

About two weeks ago I deleted EVERY name in my address book but Gary Archer got one "from me" the other day. I have gotten notices that the mail delivery system did not send my emails since it contained a virus. I HAD NOT SENT THAT EMAIL. This KLEZ virus must never go away if one person still has it. I have been deleting every name in my address book every day. I am receiving very few virus infected emails lately. SoSweet, I hate to see you drop off the site, and that may not help you since you may already be in the address books of some of the members. |

SoSweet, Are you sure your IDE (ribbon) cable isn't loose. You'll get a can't find hard drive error if it isn't plugged snuggly into the hard drive. Going to the site itself won't give you a virus. Openning some of the email you get from members of the site will. Stick around... Just a suggestion. |

Exactly. Visiting a site will not give you a virus. Ed....Deleting people from your address book does not cure your virus. That is like saying by removing the doorbell, you cleaned the house. 1) Clean the virus out of your computer. 2) Get online protection and/or firewall. 3) Don't open ANY attachment with an extension you don't know. |

p.s. If you are using DSL or a cable modem you really should use some sort of firewall. You will be surprised at how many daemons are running out there, just looking for systems to get into. http://www.zonealarm.com offers one for free. Go to their download page, the free version is at the bottom of the page. I use it at home. It may cause problems mapping to drives on another network (at work for instance), and I have to disable it to play some internet games (Quake 3, etc). But it works well for me. Mike |

SoSweet - I hope you come back because the virus isn't coming from the site itself. There are certain member(s) that occasionally get infected and then when emails are sent out with attachments, others get infected. You should verify that your computer did have a virus first. Use Norton or McAfee to check. More than likely your problem was hardware related. I have been on this site since 2001 and have never been infected by a virus. Stick around - this is the best site with the best people around |

I check the site from both my home computer and my office computer. Both use a cable modem, both have firewalls and virus protection. There has been a lot of activity with viruses lately on both my machines. So far I have caught all the infected e-mails. There does seem to still be a lot coming from POA members. My machines are both clean as of now. |

Black Tie, I think you missed my point. I cleaned my virus out and now I do not have anyone in my address book but yet other POA members are supposedly still getting the virus from me. Since I do not have it and my address book is blank it would seem to be impossible for someone to get it from me, YET Gary Archer got one from me. I have also gotten notifications that I sent emails with the virus to people that I have never even heard of, (by getting returned emails from the email post office). How is that happening? |

Ed - you don't have the virus (since you already checked and said you are clean). Someone else who has you in their address book has the virus. The emails are coming from them but changing the return address to you. It all becomes clear when the header of the email is examined, it shows where it is REALLY coming from, not just whose address it says to reply to. Hope that helps Ed ------------------ |

Mike K. Please go into detail, again, why there is no stinky viruses on this site. |

I don't think that is any reason to insult someone. SoSweet may be misinformed about how viruses work , but to say "Some people are smarter than others" was insulting even for me to read. |

And I say again, this site has no viruses Again , sorry if I offended, sometimes it's better not to post when under certain stresses.....My mistake, I should have not posted,,,just being protective of this site. |

I hear ya Gary.....I try to not post anything before I had my coffee!! Sometimes crankiness leaks out into a response. I actually was surprised at your reply since I consider you one of the ambassadors of goodwill on this board. Thanks for the reply! I really try to think before posting, as I have had times where posted things on a board that was better left unsaid. This Klez virus was hell to remove from my home computer and caused much frustration. You actually have to manually remove part of the virus through a series of folders and keystrokes, since the virus itself PREVENTS the downloading of anti-virus software!!! It is an ingenious and infuriating virus! My wife saw what was involved in removing the virus, and she knew the average computer user would not stand a chance in full removal of that nasty virus. A truly stupid computer user says things like... "The slot in my computer won't take my credit card."

SoSweet, All the bases have been pretty much covered, except 1 - Klez (which is the one going around POA) uses trigger dates - it's triggered to go off on the 6th of various months, the last being September, the next being November, see: I also received a wave of them on 8/6 and 8/7, as is posted on the referenced page, so these dates aren't absolute. The point is, just because you NOW know about the virus doesn't mean you didn't get it a week ago, a month ago, or 90 days ago and it just now triggered. That's what makes it so difficult to track down. -GRROWL This message has been edited by GRROWL on 09-18-2002 at 03:35 PM |

You are right, I am NOT very computer intelligent, I was told by a computer "geek" that the symptoms were VIRUS. Nobody has checked my computer yet. It did have Norton anti-virus protection, apparently it was out-dated or it didn't work. I was told that opening attachments is the leading cause, but I assure you, I did NOT open any. My bosses computer works good, I'll use his. |

Someone post that link that lets you check your computer for the virus PLEASE. Cliff, THANK YOU very much. I keep getting blamed for the virus and I keep checking my computer. I did have it. I confirmed I had it when I ran the SYMANTEC or whatever it is called. I did not have it the previous day but knew when I got it so I repeated the SYMANTEC and then removed it again. Then I ran it again to make sure it was gone. I am keeping my address book blank for awhile. I am not forwarding any jokes that I get. I am not opening any emails that are from unknown people that have attachments. |

Ed, go one step closer to security. DO NOT OPEN ANY ATTACHMENTS whether you know the sender or not. Nine times out of ten, that attachment will get you in trouble! ------------------ |

Another site for the anti virus is: http://housecall.antivirus.com they also give information about virus. The first time is free. They also sell programs that check your system automatically. It also checks programs and publisher certification. It'll also tell you the software that will go with your computer. It was easy! And your talking to someone who knows nothing about computers. Just ask Niteman and Lucy!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the best site. You get help with any problem! Someone is alway there and they are ready to help. Couldn't ask for a better bunch of people! Hey Hang in there! |

Two days ago Norton notified me that I received a klez.H virus by e mail. I quarantined it then deleted. After checking the registry for foreign virus code and finding none I went to e-mail and found two virus emails, ( postmaster returned mail Japanese lass sexy pictures). Do not even select anything like these. From what I understand if you click on an infected e-mail like klez.H you will be infected, so how can you delete the e-mail without selecting it first?. I will call dell for an answer, unless someone here knows?. Good luck!! |
