There is a short post on the Technical Discussion Board re: how best to install 4-point harnesses.

If any members have experience with this, there are a couple of new members who would love some tips...

THANKS DON FOR THE ASSISTANCE! WENT TO A LOCAL SPEED SHOP TODAY, HAD THE GUY SCRATCHING HIS HEAD. BUT GOT SOME POINTERS FROM HIM. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW THE DRIVER SEAT IS INSTALLED. OK, I KNOW THAT SOUNDED STUPID, BUT WHAT I NEED TO KNOW IS (I SHOULD CHECK MY MANUALS HAHA) ARE THE SEAT BOLTS ATTATCH TO THE BODY OR FRAME? DON'T WANT THE HARNESS TO BEEN ATTACTED TO THE ALUMINUM. (I THINK I LOST POINTS FOR SPELLING?) THANKS AGAIN FOR ANY ASSISTANCE GUYS! RODNEY.

C'mon, all you long-time members!!! I know that there are some drag racing members out there and others who must have put harnesses in their Prowlers...

There must be some method that bears the highly-prized "Seal of Approval" for this!!!

Otherwise, we're gonna end up attaching 'em to the trunk struts or something, and embarrassing the rest of you by our ignorance...

Help before we drill!!!

Rodney,
If you look at this picture, there is nothing but aluminum.

Just make sure where you mount to.

We always save a project or two for the newbies to figure out! I had to figure out how to install round headlights. It's your turn!!

Be sure and keep us posted of the final process.

Oh - also, when you are done figuring that out, we could use a good method to attach a NHRA approved roll bar for those of us who like to hit the track!

Happy Prowling

Marty, your confidence in me is grossly misplaced. As noted in prior posts, I represent the most extreme fringes of mechanical ignorance and ineptitude.

Nevertheless, I will consult with some folks who are smarter than I am (there's a whole lot of them, so it might take awhile...) and see if a solution can be found.

I still think the trunk strut mounting bolts look pretty good to hold the rollbar and the harnesses...They must be at least as strong as the center caps...

Well, GR8RALLY, it looks like we're on our own with this one...

According to the boards, about 225 people have read these posts, but it looks like nobody's gonna step up.

SOOO...talked to a friend who does some vintage sports car racing. He says that the shoulder belts are going to have to be mounted to the bulkhead behind the seats somehow. He said that bolting to the floor (even using the seat track mounting bolts) will cause some kind of "shear" problem if there were an accident, and the brackets would not hold. He also definitely said that the mounting would have to be through a double thickness area, or would need to otherwise be reinforced. He wasn't sure if putting some kind of steel plate or fender washer beneath the cockpit "tub" would be sufficient or not.

He's going to ponder this over a few beers this weekend and give me some suggestions. He's a pretty sharp guy, so he may come up with something.

I am pretty sure that the stock seatbelt attachment points would be OK for the lap belt portion, provided there's room for the aftermarket bracket to fit...

I will try to get to my local dealer this weekend and see if they can show me an exploded diagram or something that lets us see how the seats, belts, and tracks are attached. Maybe that will give us some ideas. The Simpson racing equipment retail store is just up the road a bit from my office, so I may head over there next week just to talk to them and see if they have any thoughts.

Putting in a set of harnesses shouldn't be so hard, but I'm starting to learn that with these cars, nothing is very easy.

However, think of the tremendous admiration and respect we will gain from the others when we solve this problem...NOT.

DED & GR8 - Good luck with your project. I am sure you will get a lot of satisfaction being the first to figure something out! Somebody always has to be first.

Thanks Don, Marty. So this must be a "right of passage" a nubie must take on, and I for one, is up to the challenge! Heck, I took this week off to redo my garage and install my new Kwiklift. Hopefully I'll learn how to post pictures. But now I'm sneaking off to local shops trying to figure out how to install a harness. HaHa! Did somebody say rollcage? hum? Talk to you guys later, hopfully with good news. Rodney

GR8RALLY, I talked to the guys at Simpson racing products and they gave me a number of a local fabrication shop that they refer all their harness/roll bar work to. He says he doesn't know if they've done Prowlers, but says they are a full-on race fabrication shop.

Naturally, they're not answering the phone today, but I'm going to keep on them. It sounds like we may be able to get a little help from some guys who know their stuff.

Unfortunately, I learned that Simpson only makes their harnesses in red, black and blue. I know Deist Safety and several other manufacturers make all kinds of colors to match our cars, so I'll check some of their ads to see what's available.

Will post what I find out...

Don, shame on me, but I went and bought a import car magazine today called "Super Street". Seems they always have good tech info, even if its for the import cars. Felt I'll be able to take some of there ideas and adapt them to the Prowler. The reason I bought the magazine was that it has an extensive article on the "Fashion Dos and Don'ts for your Car". Guess what, talks about racing seatbelt harnesses! Hurray! I'll do the same Don, I call simpson and other harness company's to see if they can steer me in the right direction. Take care, Rodney
