OK has anybody been hit in the back of the head while cleaning the engine compartment????????? I was detailing under the hood last week and found myself veritably trapped under the hood. |

Mine was out of warranty so I had to pay for them. I don't remember the exact price but it was under $30 for the pair. Mine got so bad the hood wouldn't stay up unless the temperature was over 80 outside and then I did not trust them. They went bad before the warranty endded bu I put off getting them replaced until too late. |

One of mine has lost the retaining clip at the bottom and will pop off , causing the hood to come crashing down without notice. It took 2-3 times of this happening before I decided to brace the hood to prevent it from coming down on me. The shocks have been replaced once and this is on the list of items to be fixed whenever I make it to the dealer. ------------------ • MTD Prowler Intake System 2.2 |

Until you replace them you can put a C-clamp or visegrips on the strut to keep it from collapsing and having hood fall on your head or hands. |

Marty - you are right, that will work, BUT, they (DC) my determine that you caused the failure by placing the vice-grip on the support rod and damaging it. If under warranty, I'd stay away from doing that for now. JMO ------------------

Lee, it has happened to me, especially if it is cold or if the car is on a hill (pretty good chance of a hill in Cincy). I have not replaced them but probably will be shortly. Is it a dealer only part or is it a generic? |

Mine went during the winter. Used a hunk of 2x4 as a prop until the dealer replaced them under warrantee (they were in stock, by the way). -GRROWL P.S. - if you live in an area with cold winters, and your struts are marginal now (check them), be VERY CAREFUL when it gets cold. |

Can you replace the gas struts for the hood with the originally designed prop rod (1997 - early 1999). I have the prop rod and find it is better for 2 major reasons: 1. The Prop rod will never wear out. 2. The Prop rod holds the hood up higher then gas struts. ------------------ |
