This auction for Kat caps seems high:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1857309738

They're looking for $164 + $9 shipping for a new set of four. Is this the going rate?

Unfortunately, that's about right - my best price is $41.55 each delivered (no tax, no shipping).

P.S. - for the WORST DESIGNED part on the car!

GRROWL - agree with worst part of car. Wondering how many DC has replaced?

Bought two extra and paid $44.00 each.

You have to Hot Glue the inside of tabs to make them last, otherwise you just have 'crap' center caps.

OK, AC, let's resolve this once and for all.

This is where the center cap issue and warrantee issues collide.

I have NO DOUBT WHATSOEVER that the ALLEY CAT APPROVED center cap fix works. Before I do that, I need a definitive answer as to how this impacts the 3/36 warrantee and the 7/100 warrantee.

I know they are covered under the 3/36 - have had several replaced that way (including one that was missing). However, the pages of fineprint in the 7/100 make it unclear whether coverage ends in few months (I have 33,000+ in 27 months, so the 3/36 runs out soon). As long as DC replaces them under warrantee, I'm not going to give them an excuse to stop. But with the 7/100 excluding "steel and aluminum wheels" and "wheelcovers" and many "exterior" and "trim" items, it's certainly not clear to me.

Does anyone know if wheel caps are covered under the Chrysler extended warrantee? If so, I'll shut up now and just keep replacing them under warrantee for the next 4 years or so.

OK GRROWL - GOING TO GIVE THIS A SHOT.

If you HotGlue them, chances are that a ***** service writer wouldn't cover them under warranty. They say they have to send them back to the vendor who made them. You could tell them it flew off on the freeway @ 70mph, hit by a thousand other cars, and nothing left to hand them. (Tell them the mile marker it came off, )

I'm not positive, but I would say they are NOT covered under any extended warranty, unless it states: bumper to bumper coverage,,,,,,,,JMO

If you are going to take your wheels off to clean often, then Hot Glue them and make your life easier and less stressful. It pis$es me off to break anything,,,,you are probably the same way. If you don't take your wheels off often and under warranty, then leave them "as is" for now. Its sad that we even have to discuss this issue, as American Racing could have done a much better job in designing them in the first place.

AC,

Unfortunately, this doesn't resolve anything.

A few disjointed thoughts:

- I'm slipping in my old age. I should have asked in my last post, "AC, if the hotmelt glue system works so well, why did you just order 2 spare wheel caps?" That's actually a real question.

- I already used the "I was just driving down the road and the cap fell off" excuse once (it actually broke a second tab while I was washing it, and I suspected that it wouldn't stay on for long with only 3 tabs left). This excuse won't work any better in the long run than "the dog ate my homework".

- A strict reading of the extended warrantee doesn't exclude wheel caps - they're not aluminum or steel wheels (they're cheap crap plastic, as you so eloquently point out); they are not wheel covers (they're hub covers, wheel covers would be 17" or 20"); they're not "soft trim"; etc. You can probably tell I don't shy away from a fight.

- I think DC should be expected to remedy this situation. We're the only organization in the world that has any chance of convincing them. This is no different than the old top latch problem - I had three of them replaceed because of the cheap crap plastic secondary latch, with the charge to Chrysler beiing $225.56 each time. Chrysler did a good job redesigning the part so it shouldn't break again, and it's now available for $4.50 rather than requiring the whole assembly. There must be some way short of a class-action lawsuit that this can be resolved. If it was a $5 or $10 item, it might be different. At $160-plus for a set (and I'm working on my third set) it's another story.

- The reason I feel so strongly about this is that it's like a huge pimple on a supermodel's nose - the greatest car in the world doesn't feel so great with the cheap crap plastic pimples on each wheel.

JMHO

I belive that unless you up-graded your 7-70 it is for power train only and some electrices, will not cover the caps like or not, as a service writer I can just about betcha they wont cover them however time to scream GODWILL DC wants to take care of the viper and prowler owners but you will need the right dealer to back you up

GRROWL - to why I ordered two extra center caps? The Alley Cat is in for the long haul within my family - going to the grandson someday when I can't see to drive. Parts by then may be hard to find, so I am stock piling some parts for future use. Some people have spyder-mites under their beds,,,,I have Prowler parts Right now, I have the Budnik wheels on and am not using the 'fine made' chrome center caps.

AC,

I just KNEW you would come up with the ULTIMATE fix for the @#$^%&* center caps. Congratulations!

"Death is the ultimate cure for all illnesses".

-GRROWL

P.S. - On a positive note, if anyone has a broken center cap WITH THE TABS, I believe I have the idea for permanent fix (it's ONLY an improvement on the AC stamp-of-approval fix, not a replacement). It represents overkill as a preventive measure; but also allows the repair of broken-off tabs. Leave me a message, or Email me, for my address. This will still void the warrantee, but I believe it to be bulletproof and the first way to repair tabs that have already broken.

#2 P.S. - I'm trying to watch the IRL race, and you leave me hanging on your idea? GIVE IT UP, maybe you can get a $5 user fee per cap for the idea

AC,

Not wanting to be one of those sub-feline beings that point out all of the problems without offering up solutions, and given that the materials that I plan to use may have adhesive incompatibilities, I preferred to take the positive approach and announce the fix after I confirmed it in the kathouse (I'm not sure this metaphor is working so GRReat). Rather than the $5 user fee (per cap), being the benevolent kitty that I am I would offer it free for all kat-kind.

Back to the question, does anyone have a broken cap to donate for the sake of all kitties??? I'll even settle for missing tabs (ideally, including the broken off pieces would help), I can probably "scratch" (OMG) something up??? (now I KNOW this metaphor ain't working so GRReat!)
