I live in FL. if I buy a Prowler in Ohio from a private party do I pay taxes on it? I dont think I pay the tax in OH, so do I pay them when I title the car in FL? |

I bought mine in TX and paid tax on the purchase price listed on the invoice when I registered it here in CA. Check with your local DMV, I think it is like that for all interstate sales. |

yes, that is the way it works. The only way to save any tax money is to lower the cost shown on the paper work, not that I would do anything like that. |

Better move to GA guys. We pay no taxes on used vehicles. Only an annual property tax. I purchesed a car in CA and had to execute an excemption since the car was going out of state. Cost about $18 to register the car once it arrived here. 70 Superbird. Gordon |

Depending on the rate of sales tax, it may be cheaper to initially register it in a low sales tax state, then transfer your title to Florida. I think Minnesota has 6.5%, but Florida probably has a higher rate than that. Every 1% difference will be over $300 in taxes paid.

In Arizona and many other states, when buying from a private owner, you do not pay any sales tax. FYI |

NOT ALL STATES HONOR the sales tax from another state. I have heard of a guy that bought a dump truck (68K)in Florida and paid the tax there and then drove it to Indiana and they wanted the sales tax again since he didn't registered it in Florida. He was pissed. |

Larry is right on that one. I'd go for the exemption for an out of state purchase and try your luck in the state you register the car in. You can bet that the final state will collect if they do charge taxes on used cars. Gordon |
