Greetings all.

I am proud new owner of an Inca Gold 2002, but I have a concern that some of you Cat Gurus can possibly put to rest. I purchased the car from a Dealer in Arlington, TX. They informed me that the car was "New" but considered MSO. I am still unsure what that means. Anyways, for the past 2 weeks, I have been paying more and more attention to the detail of the assembly of my new toy...

I have come up with a list of things that make me think that this car has some previous bodywork, but am unsure due to some the postings I have read that describe these cars as being "hand-built". If anyone is aware of similar "characteristics" on their cars please let me know. If these are specific to my "new" Cat, then I will have to have a word with my dealer, if not, then I will continue to enjoy my new toy and move on...

findings...

- Conv Top leaks in the middle of door windows (got caught in semi-heavy rainstorm one day)
- Trunk hinges show signs of adjustment (torx screw showing metal)
- Door latch-pins (attached to door jam) show signs of adjustment (torx screw showing metal)

- Getting some "airflow" coming in by driver's side "leg" area (seems door not sealing properly-noticed one day when getting a "heat-stream" from the engine)

Sorry for the novel...

Thanks for any and all help/info.
-George

George, First of all, welcome.
How many miles were on the cat when you picked it up?
You came to the right place for questions.
Almost all of the tops leak in the middle of both doors. You can adjust the rubber strips in the soft top and possibly stop the leaks but probably not. The only sure cure is don't drive it in the rain.
The trunk lid adjustment would be normal to try to get it lined up with the top edge of the doors. I do not have any knowledge of the door pins but someone else will comment later, I am sure. My trunk lid was dragging slightly when I got mine, brand new.
The airflow on the side of your left leg is normal, not that it should be normal. The only known cure is turn on the air conditioner to try to combat it and a few have wrapped the catalytic converters in aluminum foil backed insulation to try to prevent so much heat from escaping into the cabin.
The cars were made mostly by hand and so tools were used on the various parts.
Try to make it to a local cruise in and check out the other Prowler up close and personal and see if they look the same.
The good news is that there are a huge number of Prowlers in Texas, especially Dallas and Houston.
Get hooked up with those folks and inspect their parts to see if yours looks pretty similar.
Check in often and watch out for Alley Cat. lol

MSO is Manufactures Statement of Origin. That is the paperwork that your state needs to create a title. Still on MSO means the vehicle has never been sold to a retail customer. Normally the MSO goes from the manufacture (Daimler-Chrysler in this case) to the dealer. If the dealer sells the vehicle to another dealer the MSO is signed over to the purchasing dealer. I imagine each state law varies on how long a vehicle can remain on an MSO. In Colorado, when I was a dealer, 200 mile was the cut off. After that the vehicle had to be titled and is considered used. If you finance a new vehicle you will never see the MSO. It goes to the Department of Motor Vehicles where a title is created from it and then the title is sent to the finance company. If you pay cash in the states I am familiar with, the MSO is handed to you at the purchase. The you take it to the DMV and they return a title to you.

In backing up to the beginning of the first paragraph. A vehicle can still be on a MSO and in the hands of a retail customer. Only because he/she has never licensed the vehicle. But he/she can not re-sell the vehicle without applying for a title and purchasing license plates.

Welcome to the club. They paint and THEN move the doors and other hinged items around to "fit" on all our cars.

George.......Congratulations on your new Gold Prowler and welcome to the POA.

Ed is correct.......convertibles are notorious for leakage and Prowler is no exception. They were entirely hand-built and I think most Prowlers have some leakage at the windows.

The paint plant (MSX) had actually hired one specific person to adjust the deck lids on the Prowler. I was there one day watching him work. Some were easy, others were not and took a lot of adjusting. Keep in mind that the tubs were already painted. He even told us that sometimes he would take the deck lid off and try another one if he couldn't get it to adjust correctly. Because these were hand-built, you probably won't find two exactly the same. I have two Prowlers and have noticed differences in them...the deck lid being one of them.

It wouldn't be unreasonable, based on the adjustments I've seen with the deck lids, that doors would need adjusting also to make sure they fit correctly.

Enjoy your new cat and make sure you hook up with all those Prowlin' Texans that live in your area!

GoldRush,

I'd like to add one more piece to the puzzle. I bought my Kat a week ago from a dealer in Temple, TX (although it was there for at least 6 months). He purchased the car from an Arlington, TX dealership and provided an MSO with both dealer names as Phil Robbins describes.

I'm not sure of the relationship among Chrysler dealers here in Texas, but understood that some dealers were buying at least one Prowler to keep in their showrooms to attract customers. Lately they've been selling them off.

The Temple dealer is "5-star" so I was surprised he bought the car from another dealer instead of directly from Chrysler. My father worked as bookkeeper for a car dealer and explained that most of this creative buying and selling among dealers is required to show volume and manage the cost/value of unsold inventory.

Thank you ALL for the welcome's and the Grrrrreat information. Chrysler should put a link on their site to the POA website...I can't imagine how any owner could learn so much about their car without being able to tap into the exptertise here.

You guys saved my salesman from a "heated" phone call.

I can live with these "Prowler Characteristics," and I will take pride in the fact that my Cat was was hand-built.

Prowl On...

ps...Since I am "new" here, I wanted to make sure that my alias "GoldRush" is ok, since I just found a posting from another member with a Cat named that. I dont want to make enemies.....so soon -any thoughts...

Thanks again

George, I do not think anyone will be offended but it could get confusing. You could sign in as TEXAS Goldrush to avoid any mixup. I am sure you want to be unique and since you are from Texas I am sure you want to promote your state.
You are correct in stating this is THE place to come for information.

First of all, Welcome GoldRush.

To try to help you avoid what I went through, recognize that the trunk lid alignment and top leaks are probably related.

Note that the tension on the top is based upon strething it from the windshield header to the two pins in the trunk lid. I'll bet that the adjustment that you see on the hinge bolts moved the lid forward (probably to prevent rubbing at the rear), which loosens the top and, voila, leaks.

Also note that the catch holding the trunk down is adjustable, and there are two snubbers (I think that's what they're called) to adjust the gap at the side of the trunk.

BEFORE YOU HAVE ANYONE TOUCH THE TOP FOR THE LEAKS, make sure you have the final adjustment on the trunk. Get your rear and side gaps the way you want them; move the center trunk catch down if you need to increase closing force (to stop rattles at the side pins) and adjust the two side pins and snubbers. Then have the dealer adjust for leaks. Adjustments include a star wheel on each side of the top to lengthen/shorten the top, and angle of the glass from within the doors. Make sure that whoever does this knows what they're doing (my dealer has a specialy "glass man" and it still took 3 tries and included changing all 6 seals. You shouldn't have to change the seals on a 2002, they're the new design).

Good luck, and again, welcome.
