Greetings all. I'm a first-timer as far as posting but a long time browser.

I am very close to successfully completing negotiations with my Chief Financial Officer (my wife, Jo Ann) regarding the purchase of a new Kat.

My question to this fine POA community: Is there any reason NOT to buy from a Canadian dealership?

It appears I can get a better financial deal there and the warranty and maintenance work can be done here by my local 5-Star dealer.

Of course I would be buying sight-unseen and I'd have to pay for covered shipping to southern Minnesota, but I would potentially save a couple of grand overall.

Your thoughts?

Welcome to the site

For what a car can be bought for here, why would you want to buy an export car and then convert it back to our standard...Check around and I'm sure you can find a deal here

My 2 Cents

Recently someone posted that DC was not honoring warranty work on Canadian cars in the US. I may have read that on the PT Cruiser site, but I read it within the past month, I am sure. The speedometer will be in KM instead of MPH and the headlights will always be on but I don't think there is much else that is different. If I can find it I will post it here about the warranty work.

here it is, like I said, it was about TWO months ago. lol.
Bob, It is not hard to get a great deal on a 2002 PT cruiser in the US. Unfortunately, Daimler-Chrysler is considering Canadian vehicles built for Canada and imported illegally into the US, cancelling the warranty on all of those vehicles, because US dealers are breaching their dealer agreement with DCX by doing this. I would highly recommend staying away from this if I were you. If you would like to e-mail me @ snprunyon@hotmail.com with the type of Cruiser you are looking for along with equipment, I would be more than happy to give you a good Quote. We have Base PT Cruisers that we sell for $15999. 2002 Brand New!

PS The friend program requires a Certificate # from a Chrysler Employee and has been revised to 1% under invoice, not 2% plus a $25.00 administartive fee.

Here is more from the same thread. I actually work for a dealership in Port Arthur, TX. The idea for a Canadian PT is not a good one. Let me tell you why... Chrysler send out a letter to all its dealers. It informed us on the Canadian Cruiser and why it is so inexpensive. Its possible that the mileage on those has been changed once it was brought over. What I mean is that on most of the canadian cruisers the mileage has been set to 0 once it was brought into the US. The letter went into detail, but this is the basic idea behind it. Again, this isnt something I am making up... it came straight from corporate. We sell cruisers here if you are still interested.. ours have all been checked for this.

One other difference. American Kats are governed by a computer chip to limit top speed to 130 mph because the run flats are speed rated 130. I understand the Canadian Kats do not have this top end limit chip in the computer. Mike K tried an aftermarket chip that eliminated the top speed govenor. He said the Kat got a little squirlly over 130 and backed off. Thought I would give you the pro's and con's of not having this top end limit.

Ed and Larry:

Thanks for the info. I knew I could turn to you folks for the answer.

Is there such a thing as Prowler fever? I think I've got it bad.

Hopefully, sooner than later, I'll be posting as an owner, not just a wannabe.

Thanks again.

Kevin, No such thing as Prowler fever. Although it was kind of warm here today and I had it out all day, even though I didn't have anywhere I had to go. I must have put 75 miles on it, doing nothing and loving every minute. So, the answer is no, it is not addictive. lol.

Kevin after I posted about the better prices in Canada solely because of your powerful dollar a few posts came up about DC and warranty problems maybe I think this would stop me from going that route even for the $ savings. Ed is right the headlights are on all the time but not full power and yes they don't cut out at 130 they go way faster trust me and it's a rush that I know I won't feel again it's just to fast my Kat handled good but maybe it was my driving skills LOL, There are some sweet deals down your side of the border just don't wait to long .

I have imported a couple of Chrysler cars the other way, from the US to Canada. A little paperwork, but everything seems to be okay. The manufacturers do not mind you the consumer buying over the border, what they do mind is dealers soliciting over the border or dealer trades over the border. You would be importing the car, not importing ILLEGALLY. They are trying to stop dealers from importing and then selling those cars to Americans. This has been big business over the past few years.

You do not have to change from km back to miles just as I have not had to change from miles to km. The differences between the cars is virtually nothing but the difference in price is very substantial now with the currency moves. A Prowler in Canada (and most other domestic cars) is about 10% less in Canada than in the US (and hence the reason for a lot of dealers trying this).

This is only my opinion and experience, but I would have no difficulty importing a Prowler
