Since I am a new owner of a prowler (Feb 2002-Inca Gold). This questions goes to prowler owners in CA. or states that require a front plate. California requires the use of a front plate. How many that have prowlers in CA or in states that require it, have a front plate installed? Also if you don't have a front plate installed have you been bothered by the police? My understanding is that if the car is not equipped with a mounting bracket for the front plate it is legal to go without. I am trying to get a definite answer on this. I would like not to install the plate if I don't have too. John Richardson This message has been edited by jpricha on 03-11-2002 at 04:28 PM |

Congradulations on your new Prowler I can only say if you are planning on leaving the bumpers on...DO NOT DRILL THE FACE OF THE BUMPER...Steve Gillespie mounted his under the bumper and used a part off an other vehicle to retract it. They make a set up like this for street rods and that way you can display it while driving and retract it when you wish...I think you can find in the scrapbook of pictures of his car. ------------------ This message has been edited by WildCat on 03-11-2002 at 03:43 PM |

In California it is required to have two license plates attached to a vehicle regardless of a place to attach it or not (i.e. removing the bumpers). Here is a link for the California Vehicle Code regarding it: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/waisgate?WAISdocID=88340712488+7+0+0&WAISaction=re trieve California cities are becoming more and more stringent on this VC because of red light photo enforcement issues. In the City of Los Angeles, they will write you even if you are not in your vehicle (it is in a parking lot unattended, etc.) Now - I don't have a plate on the front and I have removed my bumpers. I was not bothered when I had my bumpers on and I haven't been bothered since (except by my neighbor that always yells at the sheriff to write me up). It is only a fix-it ticket but can be attached to a fine violation if the officer sees the need for it. The way I look at it, the day they decide to enforce it on me is the day I will decide where to put a plate. I speak with A LOT of officers and none of them have mentioned it to me (except my boss but he was kidding). Most of them have a lot of admiration for the vehicle and if you are behaving right and not going TOOOO fast, they will just leave you alone. I suppose there are exceptions to the group who will have a chip on their shoulder and just have to write it - but I think they are in the minority. $68 that's harsh! It's only a fix-it ticket here in Cali and a $10 fee. My experience with this has been common amongst most exotic owners I know. None of us put the front license plate on. Benefits I've found in doing this are it helps reduce an otherwise costly speeding ticket =) or something of that nature. Anytime I've been pulled over for speeding they let me off with a warning and a fix-it for the front license plate. Usually they are admirers and won't scar your jewel as the only reason. They usually only bring it up if they're pulling you over for speeding or some other reason. I mean if they were in our shoes, do you think they'd drill holes in their $50K car for something as trivial as that? |

Plates, we don't need no stinking plates! Actually John, we are supposed to use them in OHIO but I don't have one on my Prowler. So far so good, no tickets in 4000 miles. Good Luck ------------------ |

I'm curious, since this really doesn't affect me, but regarding a Prowler's front license plate mount, is there a provision at all from the factory for a plate, or does DC figure every owner for him(or her)self? I bought my Kat used and there was never any kind of license plate bracket that came with the car. JRL |

JRL - yes it does come with a front bracket but the only way to install it without any accessories is to drill holes into (front of) the front bumper. That is usually what the dealer does when they decide to complete that part of the dealer prep ------------------ |

I never thought to ask, but I was so happy when I got to my dealer in Ohio (two plate state) to find that the front plate holder was NOT mounted, no holes drilled, etc. In my home state of Kentucky front plates are not required. When I bought my SLK I had to plead with the dealer not to put on a front plate (dealer advertisement). Most of their cars get a front plate on arrival. Makes no sense to me. A whole lot full of Mercedes, $40K and up, and the first thing they do is drill four holes in the front of the car! Mike This message has been edited by jmcant1 on 03-12-2002 at 09:29 AM |

We have two Kats in California and the front license plates are in the pocket behind the passenger seat. Have seen a lot of officers in our cars, they see us coming head on and, so far no one has said a word about needing to put the plates on the front (I hope it stays that way). If we ever got pulled over and were issued a fix-it ticket, we will do something about it, but not right now. ------------------ |

The nice thing we Kat owners have going for us is that there is nothing like the look of a Prowler, and there aren't a lot out there. When a cop sees a Prowler go by, his/her first reaction is to look at the car, and not study to see if there's a license plate on the front. That's what I've been depending on here in California. Hope my luck continues... ------------------ |

I just got pulled over in Houston last weekend for that very thing, he only gave me a waring. I told him there was no place to mount it. He told me to put on dash, and I argued that it would then become a sharp edged projectile in an accident. It seem he was acctually more interested in the fake bullet holes in the trunk. I live three blocks from the police station in Plano and those guys never mess with me. So I guess it depends on where you are. ------------------ Toby |

Had Mercedes SL for 5 years and currently have 2000 Navigator, 2000 Prowler and 2002 Viper. No front plates on any of them and never had a problem. However, I guess I may have jinked it now by bragging about it. But hey, cool cars seem to generate cool attitudes from most people, even cops. Therefore no problemo! No front plate here! The dealer didn't want to mess up the car by drilling holes. I've even had police wave as I go by. One even came over to the house to look at the car. I think they are level headed and if you don't give them a reason to throw the book at you, they won't mess with you. BTW Corvettes and Firebirds here don't have a front plate either! ------------------ |

If you're still trying to find a solution for a front plate holder that won't damage your bumper and is removeable, see the classified section. I have a solution for you. Look at the topic dated 3-5-2002 under the heading "Front license plate mount brackets for sale". ------------------ |

Can't speak for most City Law enforcement but the CHP and Folsom Police respects the vehicle's looks and will not ticket you for not having a front license plate unless you give him some reason to. Always carry your front plate with you, we keep ours in the trunk. ------------------ |
