I've got a '99, and have been having a good deal of trouble finding the recommended 91 octane gas. Is there another alternative, such as a safe lower octane? Thank you for any help you can give. ------------------ |

OK, so what is the octane level for super where you are? 92 or 93? That's what you need to use. Minimum 91 octane. ------------------ |

Have a 2000 and have used THE CHEAPEST gas I can find at local Marathon station since the beginning with no pings. Really runs fine. ------------------ |

all the stations in Indiana have PREMIUM 92 or 93 octane....I would recommend using 91 or higher...yes it will run on lower octane and it has spark sensors to retard the timing when using lower octane, but WHY would you want to run less than recommended octane I try and use Amoco Ultimate or Shell Premium ------------------ |

I still feel most gas is the same, from the same tanks, but with a different price point. I like to save money and I don't think the cat needs higher octane. No Ed it is 201 miles. ------------------ |

I was told at a tech session that the computer will detune the engine to match whatever gas is being used. If you want performance, use the highest octane available but don't be afraid to use the cheaper gas as (due to knock sensors) no damage will occur, just less performance. |

I don't know if I would go as far as saying no damage would occur. Over the long run I think it eventually will. In order for the computer to retard the timing in the first place the car has to knock. A knock is detonation, so every time it knocks it does a little damage, may not be noticeable at first, but over a long period of time it will be. If the manufacture is recommending Premium fuel they are doing so for a reason. I wouldn't take the chance. If you can afford to have the car you should be able to afford an extra .20 cents a gallon. Larry; Do you believe everything you are told? I wouldn't use anything under 91 octane. It also depends on the area of the country you are in. Here in the NJ NY Metro area you cannot find 91 octane, but very easy to find 92 or 93 octane.I think they specify 91 octane as the low end of the octane that you should use in the Kat. |
