What needs to be done to store for winter? ------------------ |

The only things I do are: Clean the car and cover it and put a "battery tender" on it to keep the battery charged. About once a month I uncover it and run it out in the driveway. ------------------ |

Here is what I've done...this is the third year now. Change the oil and fill the tank. I washed/dried the car, and then pulled it intot he garage. I applied 7 coats of Zainos over the course or three days, making sure to apply a coat of the spray between coats. Then, since I want to protect my Sloan as well, I loaded the car on the trailer, making sure the tires were centrally located on the 3" by 3" squares of stall matting. It took me a good two hours to back the whole rig into my tiny Navy-Housing garage...but I got it right where I want it. One more quick coat of Zaino spray and on goes the cover. plugged in battery tender and closed the door. Now....over the course of the New England winter I will run the car to temp. at least once a month. (Gonna stink the wife out of the house!!) The trailer is long enough that I can move the car back and forth at those times, re-positioning the stall matting as well. I plan to clay the wheels and Zaino them over the winter, as well as do a bunch of other little things. It is a SAD sight to see the whole rig tucked away, it truely is...but I had to pick a time to do it. I can go into "winter-mode" now and start little projects. ------------------ |

The west coast is very beautiful,(I lived/grew up in Santa Barbara, 37 years)and I now live with the winter of Colorado. I won't argue that California is beautiful, I just can't stomach the politics that go with CA. How do they say it...Great place to visit, glad I'm out there. Something like that. I'm sure my comments should get Todd a stirrin. Alex ------------------ |

heynow14 also make sure that the top is left loose don't snap it into the deck lid just leave it out also make sure the windows are down about1/4" so they don't get stuck to the rubber is this storage heated or not .Mine is so i don't put a charger on tha bat as i start it once a month also fill the tank half way and add gas extender then fill the rest of the way i only use premiem fuel to store it. I also jack it up and turn the tires so they don't get a flat spot on them. THEN PUT THE DC COVER ON THE CAT AND SIT THEIR TILL SPRING AND TRING NOT TO CRY. But this year i have work to do as i bought some of those FINE decals from tooooo fast ed and must now take my time ( i got lot's ).to put them on ED if bye some slight chance i screw up you do have more right. once this is done i get out my winter cat and go play in the snow artic cat that is LIVIN XL BILL S ------------------ |

The heck with the vinyl, why are your chrome rims flaking? and why aren't you getting new ones? That is warranty all the way. I had no hassle whatsoever once they saw the flaking. They couldn't seem to find it by themselves, but I knew where to look. |

Winter storage is an area where I feel that I have some expertise. While I am 115 years old, live in California and as fit as a fiddle I too need to strongly consider winter storage as important aspect of my life. What is do is to clean myself real well. I then try to wax myself in order to preserve my finish, fill myself up so as to eliminate any condensation, change my oil to remain slick, put a charger on my battery and then cover myself with a fresh diaper. Lastly, I build a fire to keep my "garage" warm and then I settle in for the long winter. I need to tell you about the spring thaw except that I gotta run as Jack in the Box has the Ultimate Cheeseburger on sale and I need the carbs in order to make it through the night. HEYNOW14 the name stp comes in a little red bottle. ED were you talking to me when you said about the flaking chrome rim's. well let me tell you a LITTLE story about that I HAD TO TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALER LAST AUGUST SO THE REP COULD SEE FOR HIMSELF WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS he wrote down the vin to make sure that i owned said car ran a check right there to make sure. then looked at the rims and said. are you ready for this you are right they are bad and should be warrenty yippppeeee. so new ones were ordered and came in tires and rims sent to be changed sent back to me and one rims is severly hacked up on the inside where the tire machine grabbed it to hold it. So take the rim back to the dealer and he looks at it and says ok we will order a new one for you . still waiting for it to show up. it ha sonly taken 6 mo. to get dc too come clean for this problem but it is almost taken care of. but the other rims are of poor quality and will be going through this bull again next year when these rims start to flake again. SO WHAT IS A GUY TO DO?.How is that for a short story. LIVIN XL BILL S ------------------ |

All this talk of winter storage... I don't think I could take it! I have been without my kat almost a week now and I am going nutz. I don't think I could stand looking at it in the garage knowing I couldn't take it out. California may have its drawbacks, but at least I can drop my top and cruise 99% of the year (sorry - couldn't help it) ------------------ |

heynow14.......I'm in Michigan also, and here is my procedure for storing the cat: We fill the cat with gas, adding fuel stabilizer at the gas station - drive the cat back to ensure the stabilizer reaches throughout the fuel system. Full tank of gas minimizes the amount of air in the tank, minimizing oxidation of the fuel. We use battery tenders because they monitor battery voltage, only charging to maintain a full charge, never overcharging. Battery Tender just released a permanent bleed for the battery and with a cap to protect the connector. Also change the oil and filter before storing it. Air the tires to the maximum pressure on the sidewall, making sure to remember to lower them to the recommended levels in the Spring. In our climate, cold winter, high humidity, stored in a garage that is used daily, we elect to bag the car. There are many types of bags. The best solution is a black plastic bag and large quantities of dessicant in the bag to remove all moisture within the inert atmosphere. When the car is removed, it is absolutely as clean as the day it was put away with the engine starting faster than I would care to have. We thoroughly cleaned the cat, making sure it is completely dry before putting it in the bag. Also making sure that it is waxed and detailed. We cover it with its normal car cover before putting in the bag. It is a type of bag that zips on three sides. You drive the car onto the bag carefully. Distribute the dessicant tubes under the hood, in the trunk, in the interior and in the bag. We used 20 lbs. and extracted 1 to 1 1/2 gallons of water. Then we put on the normal cover so that the bag doesn't scratch the car if it blows around at all. We put on the battery tender and zipped up the bag. When we took it out this Spring, it was as clean and beautiful as the day we put it in. ------------------ Classic/Beautiful - I'm referring to the Cat of course! |

What is a "battery tender"? ------------------ |

John: A battery tender is a low amperage charger that "trickle" charges the battery on demand. It keeps the battery from going dead during winter storage especially as the battery ages. ------------------ |

Battery Tender is a brand name for a very sophisticated battery storage system. They retail for $59.95, but you can search the internet with their name and find one for about $40.00....don't pay more. The system monitors battery voltage and charges at 1.25 amp per hour until the voltage returns to full charge. It automatically shuts off and monitors voltage until needed again. It doesn't boil the water out of the battery nor does it overcharge it. It is a 12-volt. We have them on several cars that we store. My Dodge Ram, my 83 CJ-7, 69 Scrambler and my Prowler during the winter. Also have them on our pontoon boat, and lawn tractor. They also make a 6-volt. Here is the site where we purchased ours, and I see they came down in price! The part #: (01991) $33.95 Battery Tender 12 Volt #0210128 This message has been edited by CJ on 10-13-2001 at 11:50 PM |
