Road & Track Named the 5 best Convertibles for 2001 in there July Issue: Mazda Miata
Why is the Prowler shunned by the auto industry, but everyone in the general public loves the car? ------------------ |

Mazda Miata? I had a '90 Miata for 6 years. My ex still has it (she liked it more than she did me but that's another story...). I replaced it with a Mercedes SLK. There is no comparison. The SLK is far superior to the Miata in every way. And there is no way I would walk past a Prowler or an SLK to get to a Miata (and I've never even driven a Prowler). Mike |

Yeah Brian!! Restating what you said: "the magazines, and reporters seem to shun the prowler, yet the public and owners love the cats.....why??????" I sure don't know, but then I think if the cat stays mysterious by not seeing pictures plastered all over the media (print or video) then, the car stays more exotic and rare...and I like that. So look at it that way....the "elusive cat" |

It's not just the Prowler that gets shunned. All Chrylser products have been shunned forever. Look at the Viper, for the last 3 seasons before this one(I don't know about this one) the Viper won every single FIA GT2 endurance race including 3 24 hours of LeMans in a row! Nothing against Corvettes or Mustangs but if either car had done that there would have been ticker tape parades across the country. No American car has ever done anything like that. I've read lots of Prowler bashing articles but I guarantee you that if the Kat had a BMW or Porshe badge on it people would line up to pay 100 grand for one and all the magazines would sing it's praises. I don't care what anyone says though, it's just like the movie that all the critics trash and turns out to be the one that everyone wants to see. We know what the coolest car on the road is! ------------------ |

Those in the media are often (always?) very biased about what they report. Making their friends look good, or, giving high praise to those who kick down something to them, much like politics. ------------------ |

Well said Bill. They can't say its the limited avialbility either because that was not the case when the Miata was limited in production. It was getting tons of press. I think we should start a letter campaign to Road and Track. I'm going to send one and see if they post it. ------------------ |

It always has been my point that yes, the Prowler has been the forgotten child of the press. Three magazines (Maxim, FHM, Playboy) all had the top 10, top 25 and top 5 sports and exotic cars respectively (which included the Miata, Boxster, Corvette) and in none of those was the Prowler included. We do get our share in the highway smiles department but sometimes it seems we get no respect. Even the new Chrysler commercials where all the products are shown (including the PT) there is no Prowler insight. ------------------ |

I think magazines leave out the prowler for one very important reason. It is a toy, not a serious drive-everyday car. In every review I have ever read they say it is impractical, uncomfortable, and has no storage space. Those reviews are written for a very particular demographic. Someone looking for a daily driver/grocery getter that is also a fun roadster would be much better off buying a Miata. Every car on that list is a practical daily driver. The Prowler is definately not. Someone looking for a toy for the weekend or who doesn't care about practicality would love a Prowler - but how many people are like that? |

Spoons man did you hit the nail squarley on the head. And I would bet that the majority of 360 owners do not drive them as their daily driver either. ------------------ |

A corvette can store two golf bags, a Miata can fit one golf bag. A Modena is a very practical daily driver, it gets good gas mileage, is a comfortable ride, reliable, is fuel efficient (as much as any V8 can be), and has about the storage space of a Boxster. Every vehicle up there would suit most drivers just fine as an only car. Every review ever written about the Prowler specifically says it cannot be used as a daily driver (which I think is BS) but that explains why it doesn't get a fair shake in auto reviews. A Prowler is considered a specialty vehicle, and that is the reason I love it. But it also the reason most writers don't reccomend it. |
