Pulled my 99 Cat,27,000 miles out of the garage and found the transmission was locked up in the limp mode. Auto stick does not function, the speedometer and odometer don't work either!! I recall some past posts talking about the transmission input sensor being a known DC problem. I could not pull up any info about this in the archives. Wasn't it also suggested that all owners should carry a spare sensor in their glovebox? 1. Where is this sensor located? 2. How far and at what speed can one safely travel in the limp mode, without incurring any damage? IE: Overheating, etc??? ------------------ |

limp mode is designed to drive the cat to a place of repair.look on left side of trans, about half way up the side.it will be a tan ,browish sensor, picture is with some of the old post .it is the front one rear is out put.if a trans service is due i would get it done. neal |

Was the check engine light on? Was it a solid illumination? If flashing do not drive. You might be able to reset by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes and go from there. |

Had the same thing happen and it also was one of the Speed sensors overheated and went out. One comment on the disconnecting the battery though. I have talked to three Prowler Techs and they all have stated that that process to clear codes from the computer "USED" to work. With the advent of the newer style computers this no longer works. I can verify that siince I left the battery off all night and it did not clear any codes... Thought I'd pass that bit of info along. ------------------ |

I think Viagara is the answer to a problem like this. |

I had the same problem after hitting a huge drop off in a construction zone. They told me not to disconnect the battery in the future as that erased the error, making it harder for them to track. Ultimately they replaced the sensor and no problems since. That has been about a year ago. I could start the car and it would be fine one time and restart the car and it was in limp mode, with the check engine light ON. |
