I was thinking of a PT Cruiser to go with my Kat. If they build the drop top there is no doubt I will have to have one. ------------------ |

A loyal Buzz Watch reader writes: One key thing in this whole deal is that, if a customer willingly signs the contract for any amount of money (over or under the stated MSRP), they are willingly agreeing to pay that price--whatever it might be. Both parties willingly entered into that contract so, in theory, it's not price gouging that anyone can or should complain about. The dealer is just taking advantage of the opportunities which he has access to.
Yet, the dealers which abide by the MSRP on the sale will always come out on top in the long run. Selling the vehicle at or below MSRP is better for long term repeat business than the dealer's people trying to see just how much they can get above MSRP for a high demand/low production vehicle. You can bet that those dealers selling the PTs or whatever at MSRP or below would be berated by the more opportunistic dealers that charged a premium. The "gouging" dealers saw the opportunity and they took it. Yet such "availability charges" make that first year's depreciation a killer! Similar things happened with the Viper. Fitzgerald Dodge in CA was the nation's top Viper dealer and sold them all at MSRP. When questioned, they said they'd seen the bad press about the Honda dealers on the NSX situation (where a customer paid double retail initially and then the car was selling at retail inside of one year) and wanted happy long term customers. Their (Fitzgerald's) sales numbers speak volumes there! As with other things, exclusivity has its price. If the people have to have one up front, they will pay for it in many cases. If they don't want to pay the price, they don't have to. There are good arguments on both sides of this issue, but the one which I like best is the MSRP or less argument. Those dealers will likely get second or third sales from the same customers whereas the "gouging" dealers are getting a one shot deal. That extra "here and now" commission money will be long gone while the other dealers will still be making money from parts and service after the sale. ------------------ |

Hmmmmmmmmm I've had a GT Cruiser "on order" since July 2000..now than...a GT Cruiser Drop Top would really be interesting... Time will tell! The PT/GT just begs to be converted into something out of the ordinary...I loved the "woodie" conversions... ------------------ |

As a chrysler dealer we have taken what Larry is talking about to heart , we sell and order pts for sticker and have delivered about 320 with 75 on the slate coming. We are one of the Largest allocation dealers in the nation. We do this because chrysler bases things off of allocation , so by being able to sell 360+ pt's this definately adds to our allocation , which adds to allocation of the new stuff that is coming. ------------------ |
