As most of you know, I live in good old Virginia. I love my state but hate this terrible law requiring me to have a license plate on the front of the car. To exacerbate my frustration the placement of the plate on the front drivers side bumper is a terrible location and damages the bumper. Does anyone have experience with removing the plate from the front bumper. How much damage can I expect, and can the two holes be fixed easily?? Does anyone have the Real Rod license plate bracket. It's the one that hangs down from the bumper and attaches with adhesive. Thanks in advance, ------------------ |

Jeff, just unscrew the plate and look at the holes. That is what they are going to look like. You could have them filled in and have the bumpers painted to match the color of your car. If you don't want that hassle, simply put the plate back on using the same holes, you won't be doing any new damage. I haven't seen the other holder. You should be able to find used bumpers, they have been for sale on this site in the recent past if you want to get some without any holes. There are small dimples in the bumper, even if the plate was never installed. |

Thanks Starflame. I'll have to drop Kat2K a line. Didn't see any holes in the picture. Guess I have my next project. Thanks for the input Ed. ------------------ |

Jeff - Fix it the HOKIE way - wrap duct tape around it three times You left yourself open for that one! Oh that's right, in Virginia they call it DUCK tape. hehe ------------------ |

Hey VT, why run the front plate at all? I too am from VA and been running without front plates for years on my past street rods. Most Vet owners run without the plate as well. I have yet to find anyone stopped for no front plate. However, P@$$ the cop off for something else and I'm sure he/she will add that to the ticket. Better yet, let's petition the state to get rid of front plates. I can't believe there's any value to a front plate anyway and they do cost something to produce. ------------------ |

Larry thanks for pointing out it's DUCT tape. Go figure for all these years I've been trying to figure out why it was called duck tape. Don't work to well on ducks A good hammer, twine, and duct tape can fix anything. Works on diapers to shack improvements. Gil thanks for the tip, I guess I'll thumb my nose at the law and see what happens. I'm only worried about driving in DC, yes I do this often in the summer. DC cops will pull over a nice car for anything. BTW, how did you hide the screw holes?? -Jeff The person with a memory like a not to rusty steel trap, Larry. |

After 19 years with no front plate here in California I haven't had a problem yet, even with the big push last year to put the front plates on for the camera's at stop lights for the people who like to run them. Just brown nose the cop and ask him or her if they could cut you some slack.

VT, We have the same law in MD. I have look into the law requiring a front plate, and contacted DMV regarding a motorcycle plate, with is smaller, and the frame/bracket could be placed into the center socket below the grill. Just a idea I've been toying with. ------------------ |

Hey VT, why the h@!! did the dealer put the front tag bracket on for anyway? My dealer asked me before destroying the bumper cover. You may find someone willing to sell you their's, as many Prowler owners remove the front bumpers. Well there's an idea, just remove the front bumpers. You drive in DC!!! You've got to be kidding--they have the worse roads I've ever driven on. I avoid DC roads at all costs. If it wasn't for Rolling Thunder, my Harley would probably never see the roads of our great country's capital. Gil ------------------ |

I went 4 months with no front plate. Then a local cop gave me a ticket ($75.00). I think it was a love hate thing (he loved the car but hated the fact that he didn't have one). Got the bumper bracket from Realrod with in a week. I just could not get my self to drill those holes. Been thinking about the idea of adding a electric actuator to it so I can retract it out of sight when I want.

I was also thinking of an actuator, and I am going to look at one Saturday. How would you mount it. Would you need the Real Rod bracket? Richard ------------------ |

The Realrod bracket fits really good to the bottom of the bumper and gives you a good platform to mount what ever you needed. It's really made out of some heavy duty stuff. |

Gil, Had no choice on the matter. I got there to pick it up and it was on already. At the time I was still in the "I got a Prowler" mode so I didn't say anything. I have hated it more each and every day it's on. It's like a huge white pimple on my cat just laughing at me. Believe it or not I like the bumpers, and I'm sure VA has some silly law saying you have to have a bumper. DC has the worse roads in the US, I agree. I have three clients I work for downtown and know each pothole and construction site between home and there. An electric actuator sounds like a good idea. Rather James Bond. Think I'd leave it up all the time until a cop pulled me over Thanks for all the good advice. ------------------ |

I've seen some old classic customized show cars that have a actuator on the license plate, which makes it disappear. I thought they said it was vacuum controlled, but I might be wrong. Works really neat. ------------------ |

I made a metal bracket with metal rods from hardware store for about $10.00 including paint. Fits under the front real nice. Bent the rods with small torch. Painted black. |
