Ok ... I have a spare grill now and am looking to get it chrome plated. I have called almost 2 dozen places that I foind on the Net and in Hemmings. It's down to the one people from here have used: Custom Coatings in Florida, and a place in Ohio.

I know I have read plusses and minuses on here about the folks in Florida ... and have seen Laddies (through the bra only) ... but before I get my frustration level raise by having something take 4 months, cost $400 and NOT be what I expected ... HELP !!!

What is the final concensus and is there an opportunity here to "work a group deal" from the POA to get the price down or the quality UP and consistant?

I need the collective advise from this wise and powerful group (Kinda asking like OZ)

Ray,

Thanks for the post, the chrome grill is on my birthday wish list. This year it is full of Prowler stuff only, I've got all the toys I want, for now. If anyone wants to participate I can post the list

I have read the posts on both places and am very interested, like you, on the final poll.

I hate the 4 month wait, but I'm not driving my for another 2 months at least.

I too would like to chrome my stock grill. I would be interested in a group discount and quicker turnaround time.

Maybe they could buy one new and offer an exchange program if enough were interested?

Does anyone have a spare for sale? E-me... thanks john

Ray,
If the place in Ohio you are refering to is Custom Chrome Plating in Grafton they will not do a Prowler grill. I have just picked up some parts that they did for me. The radiator support and the four support bars along with the nuts and screws that mount them. They came out GREAT. Very high quality job. Earlier last year I had brought the grill to them to see if they would do it. There answer was no. They felt that they could not bring it up to thier standards. Plus they knew of the place in Florida and said they could not do it for that price even if they would do it. So it seems that really the only place to get this done is in Florida. That it where I had mine done. You can read about my experience with that in a past post on the same subject. Hope this helps. Good luck

Ok heres what I'm doing. I got mine chromed 2-3 months back from the guy in Fla. If you will look in archives you will see what I went thru... The chrome is good, what there is of it. The polish stops at the vertical braces. The front of all the vertical braces are chrome, then its just metal back. I took it to two other chromers, they said I got as best as can be done. They said you can't get a good polish between the three platings in between the grills because its too small of area.
Now,, after a lot of thought, and talking to classic rod builders,,,, heres what we're doing. We're going to tape off the chrome at straight edges, and paint the rear portion of the grill either the color of the body, (silver) or black,, not sure yet. But that will give it a finished edge to it.
Hope this helps,, I am really happy with the grill after all. I asked all who has it and mine is either equal or better in quality of chrome..

I think Dan has pics of my grill on his site,, I don't have them, thought I did.

BTW I do have a spare silver TGF grill for sale for those interested

I had a similar experience to John. I MAY have a bit more plating past the vertical fins, but regardless, it looks great! You have to get in front of the grill on your hands and knees and peek inside before you can see the area that does not plate well. Chris (cnote6)from DFW POA saw it the other night (he's in the business of plating) and said it was fine and that it's a difficult piece to plate. The folks in Florida are nice, but let's face it, they are the only ones that will touch this. Yes, I think they could have an exchange program and get more business. Yes, I think that the wait is long. (although mine was only actually about 6 weeks) Overall, no regrets.

We should probably see if we can convence one of the many billet aluminum grill manufactures to produce a Prowler grill. This would be much better than the chrome over plastic approach.

Gil,

That's a much better idea, but how would we go about doing that?? I actually like the Prowler's stock grill, just wish it was chrome.

Wow ... I appreciate the feed back, thoughts and experiences thus far! Great network for helping our fellow (and fellowette?) Prowler owners.

I spoke with Lynnie at Custom Coatings Corp in Tallahassee today and she has assured me that they only produce parts to the highest standard and that a grill has NEVER left their facility packed in such a way as to be damaged in shipment back to the owner (she says she packs them herself).

She also indicated that chrome plating is more a science than an art (or maybe visa versa) and that no two pieces will actually take the elctrical current the same way twice. Thus the reason for variations that I have read about on our site here. She also said they DO stand behind their work for 1 year and will address any "reasonable" request.

They upped the price from $300 to $400 when they realized how dificult the polishing task was on the narrow horizontal and vertical fins. She suggested the same "paint masking" as mentioned above in this thread. But I ask those that have had their grills already done ... not putting it under a microscope; is it necessary to do this to make it look fine when on the car?

I am on the verge of being a customer with them .. turn around time was quoted at 8 - 10 weeks. Yikes ... Spring mught be here in Chicago by then!

Hi Ray.

I'm very happy with my chrome grill from Custom Coatings. I've had it for 18 months now. I thought it was polished completely on top.

However, about a month ago in response to John D. I took it off from under the bra to take pictures for John. It wasn't until than that I realized it was only polished just to the back of vertical fin.

It looks great on the Kat & I would do it again with Custom Coatings.

Does anyone know how to contact S&S Enterprises? They made a SS grill for the PT Cruiser.
