I have a splinter on the lip of the right rear fender. The first dealer I took it to said they'd warranty it, but cannot since they don't have a body shop. So I went to another dealer with a body shop. They said they'll likely warranty it, but just want to put cut the splinter out in the shape of a triange and put some sheet molding compound in there. Said it wouldn't be a big deal and wouldn't have to re-paint the fender. BUT, what I would like is a whole new fender. The service manager said that the matter is already in district manager's hands and that I'll have to take it up with him. Any ideas or suggestions on what to do would be appreciated. |

Daryl, I had to replace one of my front fenders and I would go with their fix if I were you. The new fender comes already attached to the brackets and unpainted. To properly paint it you need to remove the brackets to paint all of the parts properly. Then you need to reattach the fender using Huck fasteners and to do that you need a special rivet gun. I spent 2 says talking to DC and finally got the number of the supplier of the fasteners to find out what kind of tool to use to attach the rivets with. The tool costs over 900.00! There was only one supplier of husk fasteners in Denver and unbelievably they were right across the street from the body shop that painted the fender and they let me rent it for 30.00, take it across the street to the body shop to do a 5 minute job of attaching 4 rivets. If you don't like the job they do you can always go through the whole process I did but it probably won't be fun. Good luck, MRCAT2U Never mind I just noticed you said REAR fender. DUUUUUUUH! Marc, Your response/post was very informative. A number of people have backed up and inadvertently bent the front fender brackets. Did you look into alternate fasteners such as black Nylon nut/bolts, for securing the brackets to the fenders?? I think I remember a post where someone else went this alternate route. |

Daryl, I have a small crack in my right rear fender located about 8 inches up from the bottom and directly in front of the tire. The crack looks like it has been caused by flexing of the fender but I cannot seem to replicate the movement when I try. My dealer has given me the choice of repairing or replacing the fender under warranty. I have driven almost 25,000 miles since I first spotted the crack and it has not gotten any larger that I can see. I have chosen to not do anything about the crack at this time because I don't want to spot paint the fender and I also do not want to unbolt the fender and damage the paint around the head of the connecting bolts. I feel that most people would notice either of these fixes more than they would the crack itself. Roger, Do not use NYLON bolts or nuts!!! |

Hey now, I have a crack in my rear fender on the driver side. It starts right at the lowest corner of the tail light and goes about one inch in a diag. angle. The dealership is going to have a area rep. look to see if it can be covered under warranty. If so, I will get and let them replace it. I just want my car right! |

Roger, Yes I did consider using another fastener but then would want to do the other side to match. The fasteners and the tool to attach them are pain enough, I don't understand why DC won't sell only the bracket. Probably because finding the tool to attach the fasteners can be a real pain. I suppose you could just paint the fender with the bracket attached but there would be areas where the paint could chip and peel where you mask off the mounting pieces. MRCAT2U |

The crack in my fender is at the heighest point of the arch of the fender, on the lip. To understand what it's like, it reminds me of a hang nail on your finger. This isn't what happened, but imagine if you took a saw and cut in to the fender at about a five degree angle. The crack travels along the lip of the fender. Thanks for your input. |

Marc/Colo- FYI on the Huck fasteners. The fasteners are made in Texas, and the tool is made in Kingston NY. There should be an 800 # available for the nearest tool loaner. They're use extensively in truck and truck trailers. My uncle was a big wig in the Kingston plant~ Retrired now ------------------ |
