My first one was an English Ford named the "Cortina", a basic 4 cylinder, wth no AC, no power steering or power brakes. Everything was manually operated. It only had an AM radio and broke down at every other intersection, but was great on gas. Didn't get too many chicks with that heap. |

Midlife - Bringing back memories. Not my first car, but I use to sell those Cortinas while working for a Ford dealership, while attending college. The wholesale cost on those things was $1490 delivered to U.S. We would price at $1995, but sold most for $1600. You were right, they were nothing, but that 122 cu. in. engine did get the gas mileage. My first car was a 1950 Rocket 88 Olds, with completely rebuilt engine and Hydro transmission, in 1962. Cam, headers, and larger cfm carb made it go quick - sleeper. THOSE WERE THE DAYS! Gone, but not forgotten! |

Because of the way my high school scheduled driver's ed, (by birthdates), I was not able to take driver's ed until the last half of my senior year. I was 16 when I started my senior year. As a result, I didn't actually get my driver's license until after I graduated in June. I got a job and I bought my very first car that Sept. It was a 1966 Malibu. I was very proud of that car. I was 17 years old. Wish I still had it! |

Well my first car (motorized vehicle) was actually a Farmall tractor (not even sure of sp?). Drove it back & forth to school with bush hog attached. I than moved up to a simplex motor bike. Than finally got into a 56 ford (blue & white). |

1950 Mercury, I bought it in 1956 when I was a senior in High School. Promptly 'customized' it, and painted it a light orchid color. I was 'the cool cat'. |

October 1967....hit the streets in the most perfect one owner 55 Chevy 2dr hdt you ever laid eyes on....red and cream,"3 on the tree", overdrive, installed chrome wheels and threw the hubcaps and skirts in the trash...turned in the whitewalls....this car was able to beat many late model cars, mainly due to the overdrive.....paid $600. and was making $1.65 per hour carrying out groceries...a few months later the bug bit and bought a 68 GTO conv and never looked back.....next owner of the 55 destroyed it and it went thru the local auto crusher around 1971..... 1981 Ford Fairmont Futura (Puke Yellow) 4cyl., standard with all the pumps you can imagine (power steering, ac, smoke pump) it had about 56hp. Could not go over 55mph if I wanted to. Regarding the Cortina, you must to hate the positive grounding!! ------------------ |

15 years old bought 1st car `67 Barracuda ice blue with black top, had been run thru a fence, 4 bald tires, buckets ripped, 273 2 barrel, auto and a 7 1/4 rear end to my uncles body shop within a week for midnight blue paint job, am/fm 8 track, air shocks and aluminum slots when paint was complete, within 6 months 273 hipo motor rebuilt with headers too big a cam, few months and 2 ~ 7 1/4 rearends later replaced with 8 3/4 posi track, replaced aluminum slots with Crager S/S. had about 1 year then traded for `69 Roadrunner at the time both my sisters had `67 Barracuda's, oldest sister had Formula S fastback that was the donor car for the hipo motor, as it was a smoker and replaced with 318, and the rearend and the other sister ended up totaling hers and more parts for me. ------------------ This message has been edited by WildCat on 11-18-2000 at 08:37 PM |

Believe it or not, I still have an 8-track player in perfect operating condition and a bunch of tapes to go with it. The most fun I can remember is blowing every week's pay on Holley carbs, Hooker headers, Edelbrock manifolds and every accessory imaginable to gain more horsepower. Well actually it made the car sound faster than it really was. If I only knew then, what I know now. |

CJ, Driver's Ed wasn't an option. I don't think it existed in 1960. If it did, we weren't aware of it. |
