New member here. I have a '99 Red. What octane gas do you people use? Owner's manual says "not to exceed 91 octane", but dealer says to use 93 octane. What is your preference and why? Thanks fo ryour help. |

I use hi-test always. I have gotten bad gas and heard a little pinging. Welcome to POA, glad you made it. [This message has been edited by Gary C (edited 10-26-2000).] |

Okay let's clear up some of the myths about gasoline. The octane rating in gasoline is defined as the fuel's ability to suppress knock(also known as pinging). Higher octane gasoline does have better cleaning or more powerful properties than the lower octane gasoline. The air & fuel charge in the combustion chamber must be in a controlled burn, when too low an octane fuel is used, the air fuel mixture explodes which cause the knocking noise especially during acceleration This can lead to engine damage if prolonged. There are no substanial differences with |

One last thing, using a higher octane fuel certainly will not hurt the engine, but its a waste of money. Use the lowest octane fuel possible as long as the engine DOES NOT PING. |

Midlife, thanks for the explaination. I agree with what you have said BUT I still like to use AMOCO ULTIMATE or SHELL premium if ay all possible I guess it is peace of mind that the gas brand is ONLY what the dealer sells not a blend of many. too many commercials to brain wash us ------------------ |

Owners manual for 2000 recommends minimum 91 octane and purchase of fuels with higher octane is not recommended. |

The 2000 Prowler Service Manual, page 0-2 states: Prowler engines require the use of unleaded fuel to reduce exhaust emissions. Use premium unleaded gasoline having a minimum of 91 octane rating of 91(R+M)/2. Higher octane premium unleaded gasoline CAN BE USED IF DESIRED. The service manual supercedes the owner's manual. |
