To all of you who had such lovely words of support when I posted that the Jeep my dealer lent me when I brought the Prowler in for service was stolen, I, for reasons that I'll never understand, feel the need to give you guys some closure on this subject. I got a call from the owner of the dealership, Randy Sporn, saying that he got a call from the cops saying that they found the Jeep. Where, I asked. "On West 47th Street in Manhattan." Oh my, I thought, isn't that where I parked it???? I couldn't be more embarrassed. I got turned around in the building I was in and went searching for the car on the wrong block. To try and take some of the humiliation off me, I will say that the car was sitting in that same spot for over three weeks, the NY City Meter Guys were putting tickets on the vehicle every day even though the car had been reported stolen. The cops in the area never checked it out (it was actually someone who lived on the block who bought it to their attention). This Jeep wasn't parked in a corner somewhere, it was very much out in the open.
Well, ultimately it was my stupitidy here and I invite you guys to give me any well deserved shots you care. If anybody has a more embarrasing story, it might help me to hear about it, I truly feel like a dope.

Many years ago, I had a new T-Bird Turbo Coupe.....was outside a mall trying to unlock the trunk to put our packages in...kept messing with the trunk lock, seemed stuck...noticed out of the corner of my eye 2 old ladies standing to my side...finally one gently inquired, why are you trying to open my trunk??? Uhhhhh......well, my car(nearly identical) was several spaces over in the next aisle.....Due to one of my businesses, I drive a lot of different cars....sometimes when I come out of the grocery, I have to stop and think really hard, WHAT DID I DRIVE HERE ??? Sometimes have to look up and down the aisles to see a car that looks familiar...I thought it was just "geezers syndrome"....

Tom, It would take an idiot to report a car stolen that wasn't stolen! Just kidding, everyone makes mistakes, I think that you are very brave in telling everyone that you messed up big time! I am glad everything worked out OK, keep being honest and I will never say anything bad to you or anyone else. Remember we are all just HUMAN.

Tom, you are not alone. I personally have not missplaced but know others that have. Not to the extent of calling police though.

My nephew (he was about 10) came out of school to be picked up by his grandmother, who just so happen not to be in her two tone blue Plymouth Mini Van, as he sat in the rear seat with the door open, she ask as she walked up, WHY ARE YOU SITTING IN SOMEONE ELSES CAR?

It took real courage to tell us, of all people, of this little mistake. I'm glad for you that it ended with the jeep being recovered. Now get the insurance and parking tickets taken care of and you will be in the Rodney's "Hall of Shame" till someone out does you

I think Gary might have out done you 24 years ago. Hey Gary in todays paper was guy looking for info on who might have smashed his Caddy back in the `70's at Indianapolis airport, WHAT IS IT WORTH to you

Next time the wife says,” Honey don't you remember...", you have a great come back.

Your story reminds me of a huge booboo I did back in 1976.

I flew to Indy to go on a junket to Bahamas with 8 of my closest friends. On the flight down to the Casino I dropped about 3500 bucks I was pissed, got off the plane and walked in to the Casino to drop another 2 grand and was broke, I was freaking. So for the rest of the time in the Bahamas I sat there and fried.

So we headed back to the plane, took off and everyone still wanted to gamble with no concept of the value of a dollar. I borrowed a grand and started playing. It was the highest stakes poker game I have ever played. I could not lose. I paid my friend off, got back my $5500 and proceeded to win another $11000, WOW; I was a very happy boy with a little too much "Beverage" in my system. Jumped off the plane went to the parking lot and proceeded to dance on the top of my Seville. Everyone thought I was a fool and yes I was. So I put my keys in the car and they DIDN'T WORK. I tried and tried again and again. No go. So I turned around and looked down about 2 rows and there was an identical Seville, I started to laugh, ran down put the keys in they worked, look around to see if anyone saw me dancing on the roof of the wrong car and my buddy took my keys and we hauled @$$ out of there.

I was in a business seminar where they asked us to tell about an embarassing moment. One guy got up and told about buying a new Toyota 4x4. He was so proud of his new truck, he loved it much more than his old Nissan Sentra that his wife now drove.

He went to Lowe's (think Home Depot if you are unfamilar with Lowe's) soon after buying his truck, and when he came out he couldn't find his truck. He ran back into the store and found the manager and told him his truck had been stolen and to call the police. He waited anxiously for the police to arrive. Once there the police started taking down his information, name, address, description of the vehicle, etc. Then they got to the part where they ask him where he had parked it... the man looked up, pointed, and paused...

slowy he answered the policeman....

"right over there where my Sentra is parked..."

True story. I couldn't believe the guy had the guts to tell it to a bunch of strangers and co-workers.

You guys have been extremely gracioius and supportive and I appreciate that very much. A little more update. Someone asked what the dealer owner said. He too, has been very kind about it all, however, I sense an undercurrent of "What a jerk" in his voice, but that could be just me projecting (and agreeing). In the car, when it wasn't stolen, was some professional stuff. I put in a claim, came to a few hundred dollars. I recieved a check from the insurance comany the day before the car was "recovered" (found). I called my agent to see about returning the check. She said "Tom, we never had this discussion!" While I seem to have benefited from this foolishness, I still sent the dealer $1000 to cover his insuance deductible. I don't know if he will return any of that and I am too embarrassed to ask for it back. Thanks again for your humerous and heartfelt support. I still feel stupid, but now I feel not quite so stupidly all alone.

Tom... I too, have to bow my head in embrassment. Back when I was a senior in high school a bunch of us went to a neighboring town for a New Years Eve party at one of the bars. Well when it was time to leave I went outside with a few of my friends and couldn't find my car. So after seaching for my car and having no luck I called the cops and made a report. The next day my friend was giving me a ride home when I spotted my car sitting in another friends driveway. WELL embrassment hit...I never took my car to the party.....so I started driving home in my car and needless to say I got pulled over for a stolen car and it was me the owner driving it...cop got a good laugh over that one..so Tom I've been there.

The late 1960's...what a time...was at a Steppenwolf concert in INDY, was held at the State Fairgrounds...lots of open parking, cattle barns to park in, etc...after the show several car loads of us were leaving and my friend Jerry caught me at one of the gates...he was extremely high(the 60's),said he couldn't find his car...we pointed where we thought we had seen his car and him and a few other buddies headed that way in search of his new Chevelle...at school the next day everyone was talking about the show but none of the guys that rode with Jerry were at school....late in the day they were back in town...had looked for his car EVERYWHERE....NO CAR....due to their condition and the number of them , no one would give them a ride, and they ended up walking the better part of 45 miles home...they did get one ride for a few miles in a farm truck, riding with a load of pigs....they were extremely tired and blistered from their overland hike...they decided to cut cross country instead of staying on the road, thought they would save distance...all they did was encounter rough terrain, woods, creeks and lots of fences....the next afternoon we went back to Indy and his car was sitting exactly where he had left it...inside one of the cattle barns...a few days later the car was totally destroyed in a high speed rollover while trying to outrun the cops....he walked away from several serious crashes, unscathed, in a 6 month period of time...another quik story about this car, it became a local legend for the few weeks it was on the streets...one night Jerry, myself and 2 other guys were out running the highways when the local Sherriff gave chase, not wanting to get caught AGAIN driving in that condition, he turned off the lights and floored the car...it was a 396/375hp Chevelle and would really fly...well, it was so dark the driver and front passenger were both hanging out the windows with their hands on the wheel...when they saw grass on their side of the car they cut the wheel the other way...we did out run the cops, cruised back to town feeling the thrill of victory, and the big dummy stopped in the center of town and called the police from a pay phone to brag about outrunning them(alcohol involved here)...so while they kept him on the phone, cruisers were on the way to arrest the load of us...the cops let the passengers go, arrested the driver and impounded the car for a few days....when we went to get the car at the impound lot we noticed it had a tear in the metal from the front wheel all the way to the tail of the car...apparently had cut the side of the car on a guardrail...looked like a can opener had been used on the side of the silver Chevelle....then there was the time.....
