CJ, apparently you have never driven in Fla during the wrong season or you would know. They are a little bigger than lightning bugs but basically the same shape and they are as thick as cicadas in the air. I gassed up on the m/c one night and drove about 5 miles and could no longer see thru the windshield, that is how many I had killed in 5 miles. They are in season about a month, I think. I'm sure someone else will post about them. They really make a mess on the windshield.

Lovebugs are a considerable nuisance to motorists. They congregate in unbelievable numbers along highways and the insects spatter on the windshields and grills of moving trucks and automobiles. Windshields become covered with the fatty remains, and vision is obscured. During flights, the flies clog radiator fins causing cars to overheat. They also get into refrigeration equipment on trucks causing them to malfunction. The fatty tissue will cause pitting of the car's finish if it is not removed within a few days. Flies enter cars and sometimes drivers and passengers soil their clothing by sitting on lovebugs. They are also a considerable nuisance to fresh paint. The flies enter houses under construction in such numbers that carpenters refuse to work. Beekeepers complain because worker bees do not visit flowers that have been infested with the flies.

The spring flight occurs during late April and May. A second flight occurs during late August and September. Flights extend over periods of 4 to 5 weeks. Mating takes place almost immediately after emergence of the females. Adult females live only 2-3 days.

If the dead insects are not cleaned off, they can ruin the car's finish.

Okay, now that I look stupid.........

Ed - I've never been to Florida period! Guess I'm not going to either!

Gary - Thanks for the lesson on insects! Gross! But one question.......if they are such a pain in the @$$, why are they called "Love"bugs?

They are terrible here in Louisiana. We're almost done with the 2nd season of these bugs.

I let them ride with on my car, but, I don't let them sleep with my car... When we get in at night we wash off the painted areas of cars, trucks whatever...

The bra helps tremendously to protect your paint... I use pledge on my bras. And, remarkably these pesty bugs don't stick to the bra. But, they will be splattered all over the side mirrors & windshield.... So, get a bra and use pledge.

I may my first trip with white enclosed trailer and it looked liked chocolate chip ice cream with lots of extra chips...

So, we're counting the days to end of "love bug" season...

CJ I guess they don't look anything like lightning bugs, according to Gary's picture. Unless he is in the exterminating business and is trying to scare you into hiring him, not that he would stoop that low, mind you. lol.

CJ, I have garnered the following tips:

1. Don't go to La. unless you call Laddie first for a first hand bug report.

2. For a girl in your shoes, don't use pledge. Use Mopar Vinyl dressing, it will put a slick finish on the bra and do the same thing.

3. For bugs, I use RAIN-X on the windshield before the trip. It helps a lot.

4. It only takes a minute for a coat of the spray-on waxes. They don't last but it will work good if you're making a bug trip to visit Laddie.

Okay, Roger, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and ask what you mean by "a girl in my shoes"? Is that a reference to my husband's employer?

CJ, Did you expect him to say a Girl in your bra? rather than a girl in your shoes? I can't believe you have never been to Fla. Isn't that un-American? What about Disney World for gosh sakes? You have never been to Key West? The sand on the Panhandle beaches is like talcum powder. You have never taken a ride in a Swamp Buggy? They are a blast. I had never been to Delaware, although I was nearby a bunch of times, so we went to D.C., Annapolis and over to Delaware just so I had visitied all 50 states, last fall. Annapolis is a neat little town.

CJ, They are called Lovebugs cause they fly around doing the nasty before they end up splattered on the front of my prowler. My right arm is the size of the zipper's leg from daily washing..................

OK, Ed, so I'm a little tired right now and a little slow! I don't know, is it un-American, Ed. Never been to any part of FL - No, not even Disney World. OH MY GOD! What horrible parents we were - our adult children have never been to Disney World!

Not into beaches, heat, humidity, hurricanes or Lovebugs!! Give me the mountains!!

Roger: I'll follow that recommendation - I'm loyal to DC in every way!!!

FMITBTub - Have you rubbed the paint off your cat yet, with all that cleaning you have to do?

Hazen - Skill? Seems to me, they ought to be paying more attention to where they are going!
