One called out, "I get to drive THIS one", the others just stared in amazement. "So, what is this", was the look on their faces. The local Wisconsin smog testers were all middle age ladies yesterday and it was my turn to get tested. Incredulous looks and whispers and huddles in the office; they consulted and finally admitted, they'd never seen "one of these before". Funny, too, 'cause they're about 3-4 Cats lurking about in the northern suburbs of Milwaukee. I was first, apparently, at this smog station. You should have seen the tests they ran, or should I say, didn't run....about 50% of what a normal car goes through because I think they assumed there was no way they were ever going to figure out where anything was. I was simply polite responding only to their questions, like, "Is the engine in the front or the back?" Then the boss lady asked me to open the hood, peering down to find me buried within the cockpit with the window rolled down. When I got out, she gazed in at the emissions schematic glued to the brace near the fan and stared trying to find things she needed to find to complete her test. I can't fault them for trying the Cat just baffled the poor gals. They were very considerate, all things considered. They told me I didn't have to do the static acceleration test on the revolving drums because "we gotta be careful because your car's so slow, it might get scratched". And, putting the tube on the rear exhaust pipes, well, they didn't have 2 of them to work with, so that test was forgotten. When she finished with what she could do, she handed me a half-completed state form. I just'kinda smiled and drove off. How about you all? What have you encountered along the smog test road? |

Paul, sounds like you got lucky, but maybe you didn't neeed it if your car was stock. Is yours a 97? N.Y. doesn't require emmissions (dyno) for the first two years. My inspection guy says the car would probably be exempt anyway-maybe just a sniff test.Yours is a funny story! |

Butchee, it's a '99. They told me that the state decided to pull in all the cars made in the odd years. So, yes, it should be another 2 years now before the next test. |

Don't need to take my 2000 in for emissions until 2002 and we also have the new emissions program in St. Louis. Instead of going to the testing center where they perform the dyno test the state has mobile sniffers at predetermined locations whereby you just drive by at normal speeds on the highway on ramp and they take a picture of your rear plate and sniff the emissions. NO stopping, no paperwork, etc. If your car passes the sniff test you will receive a waiver in the mail when the plates are due. |
