I had the most unfortunate experience of having a tension spring on my garage door snap on Friday. Yep! It flew across the garage right into the passenger side door of my 2000 Prowler. I only have 1200 miles and now it needs body work! _)#@()*@&^!%%!!!

Anyway, I would like to advise other Prowler owners to look at their garage door setup! There are two types of tension springs. The "good" kind is what is called a torsion bar. It has a large steel rod runs parrallel to the front of the door and has a large coil spring around it. This steel bar will likely restrain the spring from flying around the garage.

The "bad" kind is where the spring runs along the guide track on both sides of the door, and is attached by a wire and a pulley harness. This is the kind I had. I spoke with the garage door repair company. In passing he told me that there is a new safety standard on that kind of spring assembly ... where a cable has to be run down the middle of the spring so if it breaks it can't fly off and hit anyone. I never got a "safety notice" from the garage door people. Fortunately, no one was injured .... but I figure the same safety harness would have protected the Prowler too. For those that have the pulley harness assembly, a $20-35 safety cable may save you from injury .... or just a huge amount of grief and frustration.

JC,

Hope the injury to the cat was minor.

Your door must be an older door. I don't think they install those anymore.

The cable would have saved your kitty from any damage, but NO ONE would call and tell you this because know one would know what kind of door you had.

I would suggest investing in new track and installing the torsion type door opener spring. This can be hazzarous to the installer adjusting it but in no way could your car be damaged unless it broke as you were backing out and the opener (assuming you have one) broke too letting the door crash down on the car. And just what are those chances.

If you or anyone else was standing there it could have been fatal. REASON FOR SAFETY CABLE!

JC - Thanks for the story, but sorry for your damage. Went right out and looked at my door spring - rod type. Try homeowners insurance policy coverage on the claim? Your story made me sick just reading it, reminds me of the trunk lid flying open story while driving. Double check trunk lid being locked in before going! JC, I hope the POA at this website can make your second post a happier one.

Sorry to hear about the wild spring JC. I hope the damage is minimal.

ACK! Truck flying open while driving? I've gotta search the archives for that one

JC,
I'm distressed to learn about your mishap
but have you found out how exactly the bodyshop is going to repair the damage? Since
the body panels are made of special composite
materials, are they using "BONDO" or replacing the entire panel. I'd definitely
choose the latter.

JC..If you do replace verticle side springs with torsion spring..be sure to remove "The Cat" and any other valuable cars from the garage. Installer will use a breaker bar to turn the hub to add tension to the torsion spring. If the bar should slip...you might have to do the other side of the car as well. I have seen those bars go right thru the garage wall. Good luck.

Ooooh, sorry about that damage to your cat. How about all of us covering the cats with something, preferably a car cover, while not in use? Not that it would have stopped a 50 mph spring launched at it. Kids, shovels, bike handlebars, overloaded grocery bags haulers carrying Pepsi 12-packs, etc. can wreak havoc. I just love those 12 inch horizontal "stripes" the kids can put on a car. The cover will buy you a little insurance against "life happenings". Like it's said, "THINGS OCCUR", get a cover to keep the next one from happening.
Anybody had one of those portable basketball backboards drop on to your roof? Nah, I didn't think so. Nobody but me would be so dumb as to have the rim scratch 6 inch long gash into my daily driver's roof. Talk about learning the hard way.

Don't feel safe with the spring around the steel bar either.

Those springs can pop too. Ours did at our other house and when they do, that door comes down like a guiloteen. Fast, and deadly. Hit the ground so hard it smashed (crushed) the bottom 3 feet of the door. Try raising the door to get your car either out or in? Forget about it. With the spring shot, the door weighs about 2 tons.

Apparently, this is the cause for several kids getting killed every year.

You were lucky that it was only your car and not you or your loved ones.

Check the springs for wear and oil them several times a year with WD-40
