Just got front mud flaps today (after 2 chips). Do I really need to trim them 1 1/2"??? Really want to leave them the way they are...what should I do?

The flaps have been on my '99 Cat for two years now. I did not trim them. They do drag on speed bumps, but if you are careful it doesn't seem to hurt the fenders. Everyone has their own view on this, but I'm glad I didn't trim mine

I put flaps (both front and rear) on my 2000 and did trim 1 inch off the front ones. It was real easy, used an exacto knife, they cut cleanly. Imagine hitting a bump or a pot hole and getting out to look at that broken fender, you might have wished you trimmed them. I don't know that you are giving up any protection by doing so. By the way, the fronts were not terribly hard to install without pulling off the wheel. Good luck in what ever you decide.

I drove from California to Woodward and got a couple of chips because I shortened them.

Don't do it.

Don't trim them, but do be careful if you back up over a curb like pulling into your driveway. You may pinch them between the tire and curb and damage your fender. Just turn your wheels before backing over the curb. (learned from experiance, new fender and mounting bracket, painting and new concrete curb). They really do protect the car and someone posted that the dealer replaced their fender when they damaged it due to the flaps. Wish I had thought of that.

Hey Red! Have had the mudflaps on my '97 for almost 2 years and over 18,000 miles. Didn't trim them and have fortunately never had any problems. Catwoman

Y2K -- Don't trim them. If you are turning into a driveway with a rounded off curb for example, try to hit it as straight-on as you are able, to assure against twisting of the fender.

And, as stated above, just go slow over the objects-- a little dragging of the flaps is okay. I've had mine over two years with no problems and it's in my mind that the greater length is helping me prevent against rock chips. I have none to date - knock on wood.

Well, it seems like overall opinion is to leave them the way they are! You guys have never lied to me before, so I guess I will leave them full length. I hope I don't become paranoid everytime I see a speed bump..then end up in therapy (a CA thing..
...lol)! Now I just hope my car is the only one to ever come off the assembly line without glue in the slots! THANKS FOR ALL THE COMMENTS SO FAR :-)
