We're doing some vehicle shuffling. My old Bronco II is gone. Think we're going to sell our Lexus ES300 and get another SUV of some kind. I want the Toyota Land Cruiser (or Lexus LX470) but I don't think the $$ I can get for the ES300 will get me a new enough or low mileage enough Cruiser. Partially because there don't seem to be that many of them for sale...

ES300 is worth $24-26K according to Edmunds. May go for way less than that if I sell it to a family member (a distinct possibility). So if you had $20K to spend on an SUV, what would you buy? I won't do a lot of off road, but will haul music equipment, yard stuff... want the 'utility' part but would like to be comfy too.

Could go with a small Honda... the Tahoe's pretty much bore me, and I don't really want a huge full sizer like that.

What to do, what to do... I'm afraid if I keep the ES300 (which is certainly an option), I'll mess up the nice interior throwing amps and speaker cabinet and PA heads in there...

Thanks.

Mike

The New cadillac SUV is supposed to be pretty awesome. Its got alot of HP, huge sunroof etc. Rated #1 in tests this month in one of my car magazines. You have to like the caddie style. I had 2 Mercedes ML430's they are full time all wheel drive, good SUV's. There are so many choices out there its a tough one. I'd buy a Hummer just because they are big brut's, go anywhere type SUV. A true Chuck Mobile

Someone needs to come out with a luxury mid-size SUV with serious hp - like the Durango size. The only real luxo SUVs are the Escalade and Navigator (both huge) and the BMW X5 (too small) and the Mercedes ML55 (blahhhh). The Lexus, Infiniti, and Acura, etc are toys not SUVs. The new Caddie is more like the Pacifica, and while those are both okay, they are more a minivan replacement than a SUV.

There might just be a niche for a "Chrysler" branded Durango going upscale (that is, if the market buys the upscale Chrysler which is debatable). So maybe it comes out as a Mercedes.

How about the Porche or VW Toureg? They have some serious H.P.

If I only had $20K to spend on an SUV, I'd buy a 1-2 year old Explorer or Mountaineer. The are the best value for the money in my book. I have a 2002 Mountaineer and it's a great vehicle. Four wheel independent suspension, leather interior, and all the other options you can imagine. You can pick up a fully decked out two year old lease return for about $16 to $18K.

There was a write up recently stating that the popular mini van is on the decline, being replaced by the old station wagon(Subaru,BMW,Mercedes Benz,Volvo etc.)
SUV's are holding steady, but more and more people are looking for bigger(Excursion,Tahoe etc).
My personal favorite is by far the H2 Hummer even though it comes with a premium price tag on it!

Hmmm... most of the stuff I've read says the LX470/Land Cruiser is the cream of the true SUV crop.

Thanks for the all the input. I guess my problem is like some of you have mentioned. There is no one model that really turns my head other than the tried and true Land Cruiser, I just can't afford one!

p.s. CJ, when are the '04 Durango's going to be readily available? When does the HEMI come out? What is their price range? Thanks!

Thanks again - Mike

Check out the new Volvo XC90. Alot of vehicle for the money, fast (top of the line has twin turbos), AWD, seats seven, nice styling, and typical of Volvo is extremely safe and has a ton of airbags (only vehicle with full side air curtain for all 3 rows of seats).

Has also won alot of awards. Motor Trend SUV of the year being one.

Prices around $38-45K. A well loaded AWD is about $40-42K

I think it all depends on what your needs are and what your tastes are.

I drive a Tahoe. Yeah it's boring, but plenty of room for me and all the family stuff and since it has some miles and age on it, I don't worry if I have to drive in bad weather or haul something.

My wife has had several SUVs, but LOVES the ML Mercedes. Not too bulky for her, nimble in traffic, Mercedes reliability (at least she thinks it is) and decent looking. It's good for scooting around town.

Chromer, you should have moved to California so you could have voted for Ariana.
I think her 1% popularity came from the extreme leftists
