October 91940s The Beatles’ founder and leader, John Winston (later "Ono") Lennon enters the world. 1940 The Who’s bassist, John Entwistle, is born. 1944 Singer/songwriter Jackson Browne has a birthday. 1948 1950s Eddie Cochran goes into the studio to record one his better known songs “C’mon Everybody.” 1958 1960s The Rolling Stones take their first stab at recording live. It’s a disaster. That somebody would shove these muddy tapes out as “Got Live If You Want It” shows a remarkable contempt for the Stones’ audience. 1966 1970s Van Morrison releases his brilliant “Wild Night.” Later John Mellencamp covers the song and also has a hit. 1971 Elvis and Priscilla Presley divorce after six years and one child, Lisa Marie. Despite the divorce Priscilla becomes the “keeper of the flame” reviving the Elvis estate and turning Graceland into a tourist attraction. She also has a moderately successful acting career. Elvis, on the other hand, continues to record and tour into oblivion. 1973 John Lennon’s second son and Yoko’s second child, Sean, is born. 1975 The Who and the Grateful Dead share a concert bill in Oakland. 1976 Styx release “Babe.” The ballad is a major pop hit but thoroughly alienates much of their audience. 1979 1980s On his 40th birthday, John Lennon releases “Starting Over.” The “Double Fantasy” single is Lennon’s first record in five years. 1980 2000s Joe Strummer’s “Streetcore” album is posthumously released. The former Clash guitarist died of a heart attack the previous December at age 50. 2003
