If someone buys a car from a different state that they live in, how does the sales tax work? Do they pay sales tax to the state they live in, the state they bought the car from, or neither?
Thanks!

I live in NH which does not have sales tax. I bought my cat in RI so I didn't have to pay a dime.
You should only pay the sales tax percentage in the state where you reside.

Have a good night everyone!

You'll pay the Sales Tax of the State in which you register the car. Sales Tax is only collected when the car is registered... Good luck, Buddy.

I've had dealers in other states tell me they collect the tax in their state and you show the bill of sale to the DMV back home and you don't have to pay anything else. I think it is their way of trying to rip a few dollars off of me as the home DMV would want to collect the tax. Is there reciprocity between states? I have not done this, but wondering if that really could work (pay tax in another state than the "home" state).

I recently bought a new motorcycle at an Ohio Dealership. I did not pay Ohio sales tax on it, but did pay Michigan sales tax when I registered it for plates.

Most states have reciprocity, but some do not. We bought a car in Maryland-three months later moved to Florida and went to register it. Since Florida does not recogniz or reciprocate with Maryland because Maryland collects what they call Titling tax instead of Sales tax, Florida insisted that we pay it again at the Florida rate of 6% of purchase price versus Maryland's 5% of purchase price. Florida waives the double tax issue once you have had the car six months, so guess what we did? Put the car in our garage until six months from date of sale in Maryland, went to register it in Florida and paid no Sales Tax. My advice: Check the laws where you're buying it and where you're registering it before writing a purchase check.

Good answer Larry.

It indeed does vary state by state. In Illinois if you pay sales tax to another state of say 5%, and the car is to be registered in Illinois which has 6% use tax(?) you pay the 1% difference.

If you are from out of state you generally don't pay Illinois sales tax. If you are from certain states (Florida for one) you will be charged Illinois sales tax because they do not have reciprocity with Illinois. I know there are other states we also charge sales tax to because they charge our residents taxes if our residents buy a car in their state.

There is a private company that tracks all of this, because they write software programs. Offhand I can't remember their name and I'm not sure they would answer individual inquiries anyway.

Best idea would be to check with the DMV or Dept of Revenue of the states involved for what should be a correct answer for their state.

We just Rebecca's Mercedes at a dealership in Chicago. When we register it in Kentucky we will pay 6% sales tax on the difference between the purchase price and value of the trade in vehicle.

I bought my Prowler out of Arizona last year from a Lexus Dealership. When I got MI plates and transfered the title I had to pay Michigan State sales tax....6% on full sale price, ouch! Now, I can sell my Prowler (Yea Right) to my brother in Ohio, or my daughter here in MI. for a dollar, and they would not have to pay any sales tax. (has to be in the family) When I die and my wife/family sells the Prowler, who ever buys it will have to again pay the sales tax on the sale price. This is what rubs me the wrong way. No matter how many times a vehicle is sold, it always has a 'tax' on it. That is why many people pay in cash, and then place a 'low ball' price on the sales figure, to save on the 'tax'. I will wager that over the life of some vehicles the sales tax exceeded the original MSRP sticker price! Sorry for the rant.

Missouri has an old antique law on the books. If I own a farm and trade my crops for anything, there is NO tax. All the farmers take their grain to the elevator. The elevator cuts a check to the dealer. You verbaly trade your grain to the dealer. He then sells it back to the elevator. Dealer has his money, and it shows that after the trade to the dealer, who now ownes it, owned the grain and sold it to the elevator. Not really fair to the guy that works in a factory and has to pay the full tax. Also anyone can gift a car to a son, daughter, wife, or whatever, and it is exempt from sales taxes.

I bought my prowler in November from a dealership in Massachusets. I paid the tax when I registered it in Connecticut.

In Georgia there is no sales tax for a used car and generally not for cars brought into the state.

Connecticut sucks... It cost me $2000 for tax and registration on a six year old car. My yearly property tax on the Prowler will be around $1000 too.

I live in Taxachusetts. But some times things work in your favor. I recieved an excise tax bill (personal property tax) from the town for a 2001 Plymouth for $37.00. My mother-in-law is pissed. They just bought a new Yukon XL for less than I paid for the Prowler and there excise tax was several hundred dollers. That really brought a tear to my eye. Laughing so hard I was crying.

I had to pay Luxury tax on my first Prowler. That has been repealed or raised to a higher limit. That was in 99.

I bought my Prowler from a dealership in TN. I paid 3% tax on the purchase price in NC where I was registered.

3% tax is on all vechicles registered in NC, new or used. Values are based upon a chart DMV has and a comparison of bill of sale. This is done to prevent fraud with bogus Bill of Sales.
