I am in the market for a Harley and have a line on one locally. Description:

2000 Road King Classic. It is a sweet, beautiful Harley with all the right stuff done. Over $37k invested, a bit less than 5k miles, Custom Paint, All the Chrome, Lowered, Engine Stage kits, etc.

Question: Kelley lists the retail value of this bike at $15,600 but seller is asking $20K. I have always owned Goldwings so this is a step up for me. Need to know if there is enough to justify his asking price. Thanks in advance for any input.

Here's a 99 with 29,500 miles on it on e-bay for $11,500 "buy it now" after the auction without the res being met. I know they had some problems the first year of the twin cam.

Guy if your a wing rider and you like the wing for all the comforts this is not the bike for you. Go look at a Ultra. Also for the riding in California I would only buy a fuel injected bike. $20,000 for the Road King loaded up like that may be only about a $1000 high on the screamin deal price. You have my number if you want to talk Harleys.

Hi guy

Bikes are one of my passions as well, so I might be able to offer some help here...

Looks and sounds like a nice bike, but I believe you could do better pricewise. First of all it's a "standard" road king (as opposed to a Road King "Classic") - the primary difference being hard bags instead of leather covered bags (which is ok if you plan to ride in the rain) and some other trim (fenders, etc). Standard Road Kings are out there in large numbers and are typically not as "valuable" as the Classics (although Road King Classics aren't exactly "hard" to come by either, they tend to bring more money). I sold mine for $18,750 and it was as nice as they come and only had about 2000 miles on it (believe it or not you can actually look at these kind of like Prowlers - 5k miles would be considered fairly high miles even though the bikes are good for 10 or 15 times that.) If you look you'll find a bike that some guy bought and spent a fortune on that he rarely had the chance to ride - there are lot of Road Kings out there with under 2500 miles on 'em. You'll probably pay a little more if you stay in the California market as well (for obvious reasons). It'll ultimately come down to how much the bike you want is "worth" to you - it's hard to "steal" the really really nice bikes. If you could buy that bike for $18k or $19k you'd probably be doin' ok.

Here's a couple of shots of my bike for comparison:

Thanks Guys. This is real helpful. I did/do like the comfort of the Goldwing, but wanted something with a little more style and class. I found an Ultra on eBay that might work.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4545894339&category=49996

Okay, just kidding. But the main thing I want to avoid is buying something sight unseen, so it will have to be a local sale (LA included). I will keep my eyes open, but I will not be bugging Bob on the phone. You have too much work to do with our speaker boxes!!!

Thanks again. It is good to get the inside scoop. What a group this is!

For 20k I would check out new ultra glides. I would like a better suspension than my softtail has, but also like the radio that the ultra glide has...

The problem with KBB or NADA is that no dealer or wholesaler pays attention to it when you go to sell it. NADA lists it for around $13.5K

New back then, I think they were around $17K so he's saying he put on over $20K worth of accessories?

I had a heritage softtail and there was no way I could possibly put on $20K worth of stuff unless I was paying $10K for a paint job.

While possibly a nice bike, it's 5 years old. I'd look at new (for less then his asking price) and put the stuff you want on it yourself.

They are pretty easy to work on and when taking out the labor costs, you can do an aweful lot for $3-5K more.

Just my opinion.....

I nearly purchased a new 2005 Road King Custom over the weekend. They're trying to get $19k out the door. I was originally wanting a Fat Boy, but this bike seems to be more bang for the buck.

A subcontractor that works for me just bought a brand new 2005 black Road King Classic for $18500 in El Paso, Texas. He bought $2000 worth of accessories and put it all on himself in one afternoon. Looks real sharp and its brand new. Seems like this was the best way to go.

I agree--have owned 3 H-D's & NEW is the ONLY way to go! Warranty, zero miles, smell, etc. Don't buy a 5 1/2 year old HOG even with 10 miles on the ODO--not for $20k...ridiculous asking price...I don't care if he's got $10k in accessories...ya' never get that back! Ask me how I know, right! Cheers & good luck! But, BUY NEW! You'll never be disappointed...plus ya' make friends at the purchasing dealership, etc. wink wink nod nod

My son bought a Road King Classic in black and got it for a little under $ 18,000 but did not buy the extended warranty. Sales tax is 7% here and he said it was less than $19K out the door. He then put on different exhaust, air filter and some type of box for the fuel injector. He bought it late last year, new.

Since you are a Goldwing owner. I would suggest you find a Road King you could ride to see if you really want the style over the comfort of the Goldwing. If you don't ride much and take short trips it might to the trick

But to go from THE CADDY of Bike to anything less might be disappointing

I rode a friends Heritage Softtail that was just a few years old and told him I wouldn't trade my old Goldwing for it

I would like to have a Dyna Wide Glide with lace wheels, but I doubt I would give up the Goldwing for riding pleasure

I know I'm opening up to bashing from the Harley crowd, but I love my old GOLDWING

Gold Wings are great bikes, but they're not the Caddies of the motorcycle world.

They're more like the Winnebagos

Just kidding. They're great bikes, and you're right - if all he does is long haul stuff, the Gold Wing is gonna be tough to beat. For under 250 mile jaunts, boulevard cruisin' and the occasional bar hoppin', the Harley is definitely the way to go.

Besides, then he gets to start collecting all kinds of cool Harley paraphernalia and dress like a "Harley guy" when he goes riding.

Come to think of it, what does a "Gold Wing guy" dress like?

I had a 2002 1800cc GoldWing at the same time I owned my 2003 FXSTS 100th Anniversary Softail Springer--I dressed the same on both bikes...leathers, a t-shirt, Harley Boots...oh, and a BLACK Helmet--of course!

My son keeps telling me to buy a Harley and not run up the miles and I can get what I paid for it. I don't understand buying a motorcycle to NOT drive it but there are plenty of Prowler owners doing the same thing.
If you want to impress people and work on your image, buy a Harley. They look great and sound great.
If you are going to be driving it a lot and going long distance buy a Goldwing. 100,000 miles on a Goldwing is no big deal. 5000 miles on a Harley is high mileage. There is no point in comparing them, they are totally different.
Again, I like the look of a lot of the Harleys. The newer ones are much more dependable, also. They sound GREAT. They are not as comfortable, a lot hotter and there is much more vibration.

01 Prowler,

You are spot on. I think you definitely get more bang for the buck with a Road King. I fell for the new Deluxe softail appearance. Looking back on it, I wish I would have got the Road King. JMO

Go with the King.

Come on Bob--say it. You have no love for Yamaha's? I got off Harleys in 77 after the new Lowrider I bought started to break itself almost immediately. I got on a japper ( Kaw LTD later turbo'd)and thought I was in heaven. Last ride was a Yam Royal Star that was dependable and fast with V-max gears, cams and jetting...pretty good looking IMHO too. I'm considering HD now because the new twin cam is the best they've had in a while, but you know what, they'll never be up to the standards of the imports. NEVER!!
