I have never seen the Northern Lights and I want to see that before I die. How long does that last? Days, weeks or longer?

Ed.. it is upper atmospheric 'disturbance' enhanced/caused by solar winds, usually experienced right after increased solar activity (lots of sunspot stuff going on, etc.). They are "somewhat" predictable..... I get emails from a space weather site that tell me of 'high probability' times... but tonight's is off the Richter Scale, so to speak. I've lived in Wi for about 18 yrs now, and Eleanor and I have had the pleasure of seeing only TWO really 'awesome' shows like this one tonight is. They can last for a few minutes, to normally up to about an hour ... but this one is still growing in intensity even as we write. Tomorrow, could be 'poof' gone... never really know....

I'll email you the 'alert' service that I have.... I'm sure if you went outside right now, even in ohio, you'd see some dancing 'cloud' stuff right now!

Space Weather News for Nov. 7, 2004 http://spaceweather.com

Big sunspot 696 unleashed an X-class solar flare on Sunday, Nov. 7th,
and
probably hurled another coronal mass ejection (CME) toward Earth.
Solar
wind conditions are favorable for a geomagnetic storm now (late Nov.
7th)
and may become even more so when the CME arrives. Sky watchers: be
alert
for auroras on Nov. 7th, 8th and 9th. The best time to look is usually
around local midnight.

Even better, these shots were taken tonight by a friend I called and gave him a heads-up on the display. These were taken near Amhearst in central WISC....

and even with the bright lights on his house....

They are Judy.. they are!.... A native Texan myself, I never saw them until I moved to Wisconsin... the 2nd year I was here I was out at a remote spot on a train, and saw lights in the sky. I brought the train to a stop and just went out on the front of the engine and watched them, mesmerized, for about 30 minutes! They are truly one of Nature's wonders.

Geno, I was out in the hot tub and could see RED to the west and slightly north of us. I figured there was a good sized fire nearby. There is too much light around us to see much of anything and it is hilly with a lot of trees so we do not have much of a horizon view at all.
Those pics are something else. I need to get up there. I thought there was a time of year that it was pretty common but you are saying it is not predictable at all. I did not know it was that green, either. I thought it was mostly white and lighter colors.
If you stopped the train to gaze, you probably caused all my Christmas gifts to arrive late. lol

They were incredible in Michigan last night!! I noticed them about 10:00pm very faintly from my patio, my girlfriend thought I was crazy but when they stated dancing around 11:00pm she finally believed me and we went down the street to the local Metropark (forest preserve to non Michiganders) There is a good sized hill and not many lights near by. It was the most amazing thing ever, green and red streaks shooting up in every direction. It was freezing so we headed back home and I kept going out on the patio every half hour and they were different every time. At 3:00am I had to call it quits because I had to work this morning. No words can describe it! I have seen the Northern lights over Lake Superior on trips to Michigans upper peninsula but this was by far the most intense activity I've seen! The sad thing is I think alot of people here in Michigan missed it, so far no one here at work saw them.

We watched them last night here, I guess living here most of my life it is just one of those things but last night they were so bright and lasted so long it was pretty cool.

They are supposed to be visible tonight and tomorrow also. Tonight is supposed to be partly cloudy and 26 degrees but I will be out there freezing my *** off. I'm going to see if I can get some video tonight.

This site has a really cool map http://sec.noaa.gov/pmap/pmapN.html and it says that current activity is at a 8, last night was a 10 on whatever the scale is. This site is HORRIBLY slow so I'm going to post the map for you. From the looks of the map they aren't stretching down into the states right now. Last night at 12:00 this map showed MN,WI, and MI to be almost covered, maybe as the night goes on they will stretch down.

Arggg.. I can't get the picture to post

Geno, those are some great pictures. I was lucky enough to see them while on a fishing trip in northern Saskatchewan a couple years ago. Directly overhead was a curtain of shades of white that continued to move in waves for most of the night. I'll never forget it and would love to see them again.

Today's paper claimed we could see them last night. I guess I saw them and did not realize it. It was red and was much wider at the "top" and narrow at the bottom. No report of large fires. I thought what I saw was too far west and not enough north.

On my way back from SEMA, I had just cleared St.Louis MO around 1:45am Monday morning. I thought I was seeing reflections on the windshield. When I lowered the driver's window, the view was spectacular! Pulled over on I-55 and enjoyed the show. It lasted only about five minutes, then they were gone! VERY unusual to have the "Lights" so far south...
