Can anyone explain what exactly "doc prep" is when buying a new car? What documents are they preparing? Can I avoid the doc prep charge?
Seems to me it's just a fluff charge for the dealer.

Doc fees what a great name, I buy fixer uppers all the time and when they are $25 you can understand that they need to run the paperwork down to the DMV and if they need to pick up your plates or issue you a temporary tag, and send them to you that cost something. But I have seen them as high as $250 and the funny part is people pay it.

Just take a calculator with you figure out the tax on what you are paying and straight out tell them this is my out the door price ( plus plates if you need them ). Then when you get in the office from hell to write it up you kind of have them. If they tell you but we need to add this just get up and walk out and 9 out of 10 times you wont make it very far.

Curt,
If it's on the friends and family program, it's to give the dealer a little something for their time since they have little else to markup.
If it's anything other than F&F, I'd say it's negotiable.

Was Christene any help?

Basically, you are paying the dealer for the complex task of pressing the "print" button. You can see why it costs so much, pressing a button takes a really long time and is very complicated.

If you ever get cr@p like that from a dealer, walk out and make sure the salesperson sees you leaving the finance office. Usually they will apologize, but make sure they throw in some extra stuff for trying to pull that kind of thing. WIth today's car market, they would be stupid not to throw in a CD changer or a few oil changes to make you happy.

Thanks everyone, for your input.
Actually, I don't mind paying the extra $240 fluff doc fee since I'm getting the car cheaper. But now they want $510 extra for "advertising charges" - see http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/Forum8/HTML/005883.html

I suppose they're still making $$ on the hold back (is there hold back when a car is ordered vs. a car from dealer stock?)

On the F&F program, they are already getting a $25 processing fee. Trust me, they aren't losing money on these deals...they aren't making as much, but they aren't losing. They are not required to participate in this program, either.

Curt - doc fees are mostly a rip off on the customer. It's the charge for them doing the paperwork to get a state issued title for the vehicle. I would ask,,,no demand, that you want the MSO title from Chrysler and that you will go to MVD to get your own Az title to the car. Granted, you might spend two to four hours at MVD waiting to get the title, but will save the 'doc' fees. I would go for negotiating the doc fees to $50-$75 to cover the cost for their office help doing the paperwork for you.
