Does anyone remember as a kid something called an auto bomb? They were about 8 inches long and had two copper wires one on each end. You hooked them to the distributor cap and when someone started the car there would be a whistling sound, then smoke and finally an explosion. I had an uncle who was known to hit the joy juice every night and we put one on his car. Woke up the whole dam neighborhood. I thought he was going to have a heart attack the first time we did it as he drove the car through the garage door. The second time he threatened to kill us and we never did it again.......... I still laugh about it.

Couldn't you get these at "Honest Charlie" or the early "J.C. Whitney"? I remember these vaugely, but never saw one.
Wonder how many cars these set on fire before they took them off the market.

I lived with four other guys while attending college,,,we all played jokes on each other. When we finally split up in 1970, we wired one of those smoke bombs onto the engine of one of our big jokers. Worked perfectly and he was upset with the rest of us,,,,,,,little did he know we also had placed a frozen trout up into the rear seat springs of his Buick. For some reason,,,I've never heard from him again,

We had a Pontiac dealership back then. Every now and then a customer would come in complaining about their car exploding. Or running bad. We found the remains of several of these bombs when we would open the hood. Sometimes the wires would be hanging down and shorting out the igition and making the engine run rough. I have put them on cars myself. At the time we thought that it was really funny. I've seen people jump out of their cars and take off running. Of course, there were no seat belts in those days. So you could jump out and run. Try to jump out of the cars fast today. Can't be done!
