i guess i was unaware of the medical issues you folks have to deal with... these postings are heartbreaking to me and i must admit feeling a little guilty about complaining about the high taxes we pay here in canada... our public healthcare program is far from perfect but does the job when we need it the most... you guys MUST push your government to give you peace of mind when you get older.. even if it means paying more taxes....either that or move up here...

I think it safe to say socialized healthcare is a failure pretty much everywhere it is in place.

As I understand it, BC has 2 MRI's for the whole area and a backlog of years to wait. One hospital in the Texas Medical Center has 18 MRI's (just ONE hospital).

While sad, healthcare is not a right. What's next? We provide everyone a car, a boat, a home, a TV, etc.???

Now with that said, every hospital in the USA does quite a bit of "pro bono" work (in the 10's of millions) each and every year. If a patient is brought to any hospital without insurance, they must be stablized before being sent to a county (read free) hospital. Granted, some county hospitals are exactly the prettiest or newest but, the operative word is, "FREE".

Why are costs skyrocketing? Well, two reasons. One, they have to provide "free" work to those without insurance or don't have the means to pay. Imagine if you owned a restaurant and every 5th person to dine there could eat as much as they want and not pay a dime. Who would be paying for that tab? You or the other patrons? Two, lawyers. The costs for medical malpractice insurance is enormous. I was talking to a guy the other day who quit being a doctor and filed for bancruptcy because he couldn't pay his malpractice premium (~$15K mos.) and he wasn't about to practice without one. Oh, and he had only been a doctor for 7 years and had never been sued. Sad commentary on our legal system.

even if it means paying more taxes....
Why is this always the answer for everything. Just pay more. Why not take 100% of what each of us makes and then this would be Eutopia, right?

either that or move up here...

Tell that to the Canadians that come here for their healthcare.........

those Canadians are the ones who can afford it... they spend their money the way they like.. its their right... the rest of us wait in line and take our turn... at least we don't loose everything we have worked for our entire lives to get attention... its not perfect but it is fair and that's all i expect....

my friend just had both his hips replaced because of years of construction work.... he waited 1 year for the first and 18 months for the second but it never cost him anything.... good for him, he still has his home .

I can relate, my mom broke her's about a year ago and in less then A WEEK had a new one.

Sorry, in her condition, telling her (or anyone) to wait a year or 18 months is totally unacceptable.

But, you get what you pay for......
