Have heard about all of those cars worth about $30,000 a piece Oprah Winfrey gave away? You know, those "free" cars?

The poor saps who got these cars now owe about $7000 each in sales and income taxes.

I've read that GM not only donated the cars but also paid all of the taxes, titles and licensing needed. Not one penny came out of her pocket.

Folks, for one of us it might be a good deal, but these are Oprah audience members here. A lot of these people are griping because they don't have $7000.

Also, I'm not sure that GM or Oprah or any third party could pay the taxes for them. If I give you $30,000 and then I give you $7000 to cover the taxes, then I have given you $37,000...on which you owe taxes.

Not true. Taxes and gift taxes are only paid once. Continental Airlines gives away 8 new Ford Eddie Bauer Explorers every 6 months for 8 names drawn for perfect attendance.

Continental pays for the vehicles, gift tax, sales tax, licenses, etc. The receipient pays nothing.

I also heard Pontiac was paying the taxes. Even so you could get a 60 month loan on the car and have a payment less than $150 per month. Or sell the $30,000 brand new car for say $20,000. Pay the $7,000 dollar tax and walk away with $13,000 profit. Then go and buy a car you could pay cash for. No matter how you look at it, they win. If anyone wants to give me a brand new $30,000 car that I have to pay a $7,000 tax on , just let me know.

A lady I worked with won a Feiro years ago. She could not pay the taxes on it and could not take posession of it.

another guy I know won the `78 Magnum Darth Vader car in `78 and they added the value of the car to his income tax for that year. It ended up costing him about $2,500

Your tax bracket will determine the cost since it is added to your bottom line.

Would I want a FREE car, heck yes, you could sell it and whatever you get over the tax would be yours to keep. Would I want a Pontiac G6............NO.......I would definately sell it if I got it. But it is still a great deal for anyone that was there and got a FREE CAR

Here's what I'm reading on the subject:

quote:
There’s no such thing as a free lunch. No good deed goes unpunished. Be careful what you wish for.
These are just a few adages that seem to apply -- in hindsight -- to the much-lauded promotion on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," which gave 274 audience members a new Pontiac G6 sedan.
While General Motors Corp.’s Pontiac division is paying sales tax and license and registration fees, it will not pay the added income tax that audience members will face by accepting a free car, worth as much as $28,400, depending on the options.
That translates into about $7,100 in taxes for winners whose household income falls between $58,000 and $117,000, and who are consequently in the 25-percent tax bracket, said Mark Godek, a tax partner at Plante & Moran in Southfield. If the gift pushes them into the next bracket, they will pay $7,952 in extra taxes.
Winners with lower incomes might be hurt the worst, Godek said, because the prize could push them into higher brackets, stripping them of possible tax credits.
Pontiac spokeswoman Mary Henige said GM hasn’t heard any complaints that the gift will pose a hardship for audience members, although she heard some winners decided not to pick up their car until next year so they can face the additional taxes later.

SOURCE: American International Automobile Dealers

quote:
Despite what critics call the free car that's not free, Karen Williams says Oprah staff and Pontiac representatives made one thing clear. "We had the contract that said, 'You are responsible for federal tax.' We signed it and turned it into the Pontiac people and they said, 'Do you have any questions?"

I agree with Beware! Give me the F---IN Car! I'll take it in a heartbeat!I go to my local GM dealer and trade it in on a New Corvette! Then I'll Sell It on Ebay and Take the money whatever it is and do some Airbrushed flames on my Candy! If there is any left i'll spend it on new exhaust, gears and other mods on my Vipers!!!How can you complain about paying taxes! Oprah's wants people to think she has a big heart, Great we all can with her money! If i had a 5th of her money I would reserve Lime Rock park in CT and invite The whole prowler and viper clubs for a week at the track! I would get a few nextel cup drivers, and Indy car drivers to attend as driving instructors."If you got it! it isn't that hard to part with it"! JMO

A gift of up to $10,000.00 can be given without the incurrance of any additional taxes. If they were given a $30,000.00 car that would require they pay $7,000.00 in added taxes, Pontiac (or Oprah) can either pay the added taxes incurred at no tax cost to the winner, or the winner can deduct $10,000.00 from the $30,000.00 value of the car, reducing their tax liability to the value of $20,000.00, yet some of the winners still may well have difficulty coming up with the roughly $4,700.00 in taxes.
About 15 years ago, a friend of mine won an old MG convertible replica and was supposed to pay taxes on it. They said they would be sending out the forms for it. He never got those papers, and any statute for collecting the taxes on it has passed, so he ended up getting it clear and free.
