Ed M. touched on it a few weeks ago--and I let it go--but,
I've been thinking about it more n more n wondering, so,
why not just pose the query? I can always edit it out to zip
if it appears to be in bad taste, taboo, or whatever--right?

The question is this: Why does the POA (and Prowler owners)
tend to be nearly a 100% "white" enterprize? Izzit cuz back
when Hot Rods were BIG, few Blacks had (or could afford)
one? Is it that there never has been/never will be any interest
in Hot Rods by African Americans?

I can remember back to my youthful days, but herein lies the
problem...I grew up in a very small N. California town in which
only one 'colored' family lived. So, it was a "semi-abnormal"
environment in which to have grown up...so I guess I'm asking
those here who grew up in metropolitan areas to research their
fond yesterdays in hopes of gleaning answer[s] to this query!!

Well being in contact with Prowler Owners that are not members of the POA I can tell you we have people from all walks of life that own these cars. I do not really know why they do not become members of the POA and maybe thats the question we should find an answer for. I know that when someone calls me about parts and I do not know them I ask if they have seen the site and it is about a 50/50 split that have, I ask have you signed up and about 2/3 of the 50 % that know of the site reply " I'm not a car club person ".

We need to as a group nail these people down and get them to sign up attend a small event and then I think we can hook them.

I know it maybe a hassle but..... maybe one of our computer guys can make a template we can down load with the POA info to print POA ( business card size ) cards off our own printers, keep a few in you pocket and in the car so when you see one of these mysterious cars you can drop one on them.

Well, Bob, I am really not a 'joiner' or a 'car club' person, either! What I am is an 'emailer!' AND, I like learning! Esp more about a product I recently acquired! Plus, look at all the goodies for sale--some of which I own now or have ordered: wink, wink, nod, nod! I would NEVER have known that the majority o' these kewl parts existed had I not stumbled across this website! Nor met some of the peddlers o' parts--i.e., YOU, Bob!

So, I understand where they're coming from! And I have no desire to recruit those who resist recruitment! It ain't for everybody! What is? Since U R a vendor, perhaps your motives are dissimilar! So, give 'em an opportunity to join? Certainly! My thots!

The first Prowler owner I met after buying mine was a black guy in a Mulholand blue, told him about POA never heard from hin again, the second Prowler I saw after buying mine was also a black man at the same car cruise as the Mulholand just a month later, he did not stay long enough for me to make it over to his car to talk to him. His was silver.
The first guy was real nice and we talked for quite a while. Dont know why they do not want to join up or participate.

Treyb is Black. Nice guy--met him at the Englishtown event.
Maybe the Prowler is generally not the kind of car that a black guy or gal wants?

The first cat I saw and drove was owned by a black man, right here in Newport America, a rural Delta town in North East Arkansas. A month later I owned one. His was an '02 Gold.

Couple of things.

1) Almost 4000 folks have signed up. Other then a select few, who has met all the others? Point being, 3000 of them could be Indians. Doesn't really matter.

2) With all the busing and other things over the years to force integration, I honestly believe that alot of folks like congregating with their kind. Again, doesn't really matter.

3) You could walk into a church where the population is 99.999% black. Would you say, "Hey, how come no white folks are baptist or methodist or ....?"

The great thing about this country is anyone can aspire to be anything and do anything. I don't think you can say one group doesn't buy prowlers just like it's rediculous saying all blacks are democrats.

How do you know blacks couldn't have afforded one back then? As I understand it, hot rods were striped down beaters for the most part that kids had and was all they could afford. Nothing like the $2-300K jobs that Coddington is putting together today.

Besides, just cause someone didn't have one then, they couldn't now? I never had a hot rod but, I had 4 prowlers. Go figure.

As a society, it will be nice once we get past all the color and hyphen issues and just become AMERICANS!!!!

Up to the fourth grade, I lived in a mixed race neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri. We moved in the summer of 1959. I guess the neighborhood would be classified as lower middle class. The only hot rod in the neighborhood was owned by a white guy that he built himself. He also owned one of very early Corvettes (white with a red interior). I recall some of the black adult men chatting and admiring the Corvette and the hot rod with the owner, but no one else ever bought anything like them.

Today I get lots of positive compliments on my Prowler from black guys and we talk often end up talking about its many characteristics. They love both the style and finish of the Prowler, but I've only seen one or two black guys who own one.

I have to think that in the 50's, it was an economic issue for black men to have such "toys," because they clearly appreciated great looking cars as much as anyone else.

POA is the only club or organization I belong to. I generally don't like joining things. I joined POA for the technical support and after market parts discussions. Like most of of you, I've discovered that POA is a whole lot more. It's the wonderful people here who are so willing to help others, and good-natured teasing, no matter what color someone's skin happens to be...

I met a nice black guy in Texas at VOI#8 he had a prowler besides his Vipers and other cars. He is supposed to hook up with POA Crew Nov 27th for dinner and car show then Jets game on Sunday! I'll see if he shows up! How many Chinese or Alaskians do we have here. My family came over on one of the ships with the mayflower! My 9th cousin was Teddy Roosevelt! Anyone asks me what my nationality is i say American, Born and raised here. I'm of english decent but i sure don't know any. Ok question, but my only complaint is if your going to live and work here you better learn the language! Other then that, skin color isn't important to me!!

Posted without comment:

At the time that I bought GRROWL (June 2000), the demographic that I read for prowler buyers was:

Over 45, White Male, Over $125,000 income.

I also remember the over 95% male figure.

Ty, I was not the one who made that observation. I think it was PolioBoy or someone on the thread about "What country is this" and he was bashing the POA because we were all old, white guys. I was offended because I always describe myself as an "old, fat, bald guy".
Then when the USA Olympic Basketball team took it on the chin and someone asked what is the problem, I sarcastically said they lacked diversity, just like the POA.
Now that we got that straight, lol, I get way more oohs and aahs from Afro-Americans than white folks. I have seen one Afro-American locally driving a yellow Prowler, about a month ago. I was not in mine and he was headed the other way in rush hour traffic. That is the only time I saw him. I have no clue if he is local. The car is not too practical so maybe that is the reason. There are a lot of white owners locally who do not own a computer and figure the POA is your typical car club. I have never been a joiner of clubs. I got on the POA the first few days of its existence and liked what I read. We went to the Grand Canyon in Sept. 2000 and liked all the folks we met.
I don't know the answer and I am not concerned about it just like I am not concerned when other owners do not want to join. That is their choice. If you force someone to do something they are not going to enjoy it anyway, so what is the point!

I had no idea of the racial make-up of POA members. For all I know, half the people on this site are black.

I've noticed that black guys really do seem to eye the Prowler on the open road. The first compliment I ever got on my Prowler was from a black gentleman, so I think the brothers dig the car.

I wonder if the make-up of the POA could be more an artifact of the digital divide (i.e. more Prowler owners who are black than Prowler owners who are black and spend a fair amount of time on the Internet)?

I think you might be surprised at how many of our club members are black. I've met several of them and they love their cars as much as anyone. Whether those particular members choose to go to events or not doesn't really matter does it? There are huge numbers of other members here that don't go to the events.......don't post much.......so what! If they only enjoying reading posts that's fine..........they know they are welcome and that we're glad to have them.

I live in Michigan - the Detroit Metro area.....and I always get thumbsup and complimentary comments about my cats from the black population that see my cats.

I wouldn't necessarily call this post "in bad taste", but I hope that none of our members (regardless of their color) would get the impression that it matters or that they are being singled out for any reason.

I thought POA members were very colorful. You have a lot of yellow, orange, blue (2 shades), black, purple, red (2 shades), red/black, silver/black, my favorite..silver, but there is only one white one. I'm being a bad boy again.
Fascinating question, but we know, they are all people with great taste, it doesn't mater what color they are....unless its that bright yellow.....

How do you make $125,000.00 a year? Certainly not in an s-corp. Could it be that the black population are the ones driving all the exotics? I also agree that this is the most impractical "toy" I have owned to date !!!!!!!!

Just to Clarify my intent...
This was NEVER meant to be a racial issue/post in any way, shape, form--I was merely curious due to what I saw posted about Prowlers being a totally 'white' thing which piqued my curiosity!

So, to all you thinking I'm asking for any other reason--U R wrong! I did not mean the thread to become a black/white [or any other race] issue--really! Remember, I came FROM California (and a very liberal background) TO Alabama (no description necessary), so I've seen and experienced it all...have NOT led a sheltered life, esp having served 20+ military years in many places--one of which was Wash D.C. for 2 years...now "THAT" is an experience diabolically opposite of living in Bama!

Lived in Greece 2 years also--on the island of Crete--yes, it was totally awesome! So, having seen many other cultures...such as England, Germany, Spain, Korea, Thailand, Viet Nam, etc., interest in such has been a way of life for me for many, many years. I liked them all.

Now some ask, does 'it' matter? Wanting me to say, no--it doesn't matter! But, I am too curious a person to give a standard, pat, tells-ya-nothing answer such as that! IMO, everything matters and everything AND everyone is connected! But that's another issue most would not wanna discuss! Or, maybe my query doesn't matter to most here on this board--but it matters to me, or I wouldn't have asked it. Perhaps having a Master's Degree in Psychology also prompts me to ask! Perhaps being near 60 also prompts me to ask! I ain't 20 anymore; or 30, or 40, meaning I'm not a fighter as much as a seeker of answers to questions most people won't dare to ask! And I know that. Kewl.

Whatcha gonna do to me for asking? Ban me from the board because I'm curious? I don't think so, but if we lose freedom of speech and personal expression, what's left?
I bear no person malice. I hate no one. I am simply very, very curious probably cuz I'm so new to the Prowler family and haven't yet attended the first get-together (St Louis).

I get a charge outta everyone [here] who posts all the time! I think U R ALL top-drawer people & hope to meetcha if ya' think ya' can stand me for 5 minutes! I won't apologize for the original question cuz I don't believe I've asked anything outta line NOR stepped on any toes! I DO thank each & every one of you for your replies! You are ALL very interesting individuals--and a real 'hoot!' LOL
No! There is NO WAY to properly end this post; no real bottom line--so I'll just stop!

I don't think anyone thought your post was wrong or bad, I just think to alot of folks, including myself, honestly don't care of the color, ethnicity, amount. etc. of the persons here or in work or school, etc.
