Tips for combatting telemarketers & junk mail

TELEMARKETERS:

Three Little Words That Work

(1)The three little words are: "Hold On, Please..."
Saying this, while putting down your phone and walking off (instead of hanging-up immediately) would make each telemarketing call so much more time-consuming that boiler room sales would grind to a halt.

Then when you eventually hear the phone company's "beep-beep-beep" tone, you know it's time to go back and hang up your handset, which has efficiently completed its task.

These three little words might help eliminate telephone soliciting.

(2) Do you ever get those annoying phone calls with no one on the other end?

This is a telemarketing technique where a machine makes phone calls and records the time of day when a person answers the phone.

This technique is used to determine the best time of day for a "real" sales person to call back and get someone at home.

What you can do after answering, if you notice there is no one there, is to immediately start hitting your # button on the phone, 6 or 7 times, as quickly as possible. This confuses the machine that dialed the call and it kicks your number out of their system. Gosh, what a shame not to have your name in their system any longer !!!

JUNK MAIL:

When you get "ads" enclosed with your phone or utility bill, return these "ads" with your payment. Let the sending companies throw their own junk mail away.

When you get those "pre-approved" letters in the mail for everything from credit cards to 2nd mortgages and similar type junk, do not throw away the return envelope.

Most of these come with postage-paid return envelopes, right?

It costs them more than the regular 37 cents postage "IF" and when they receive them back.

It costs them nothing if you throw them away! The postage was around 50 cents before! the last increase and it is according to the weight. In that case, why not get rid of some of your other junk mail and put it in these cool little, postage-paid return envelopes.

Send an ad for your local chimney cleaner to American Express. Send a pizza coupon to Citibank. If you didn't get anything else that day, then just send them their blank application back!

If you want to remain anonymous, just make sure your name isn't on anything you send them.

You can even send the envelope back empty if you want to just to keep them guessing! It still costs them 37 cents.

The banks and credit card companies are currently
getting a lot of their own junk back in the mail, but folks, we need to OVERWHELM them. Let's let them know what it's like to get lots of junk mail, and best of all they're paying for it...Twice!

Let's help keep our postal service busy since they are saying that e-mail is cutting into their business profits, and that's why they need to increase postage costs again. You get the idea !

Great ideas. I have been doing that with junk mail for a long time. I send it back and I try to make it kind of heavy with more paper.

When I get the siding and window guys on the phone I just send them to the empty lot across the street and then stand in the shop and watch as they measure up the house next door. My buddy Stu laughs his a$$ off when they stop in to give him the estimate and he tells them the address is the empty lot.

Actually, I like the telephone solicitors. I am kind of lonely during the day while Sandy is working so it gives me someone to talk to. Plus, it helps our economy. If you destroy these jobs, Kerry will start harping on that, next. Keep Dubya in office, keep these people working.

I saw a news article about using prisoners for telemarketers so when I get a call I ask what they are in prison for ... when they say they are not in prison I tell them I saw it on the nightly news and it is okay they can tell me what they are in for ... if they haven't hung up by now I start probing ... was it a rape? ... did you kill someone? ... did you rob a store?

It is fun to have them hang up on you ... you might want to try it.

Very good ideas...
Telemarketers used to call at a decent hour, but now it seems they call anytime....received a junk call last night at home after 10 P.M. and I don't think he'll be calling back anytime soon...
Bob....that's so mean.....and so funny!

The only thing marketing firms understand is $$-COST-$$. So if you hurt them where it counts, they'll back off.

Our approach is alot simpler.

We screen all calls when we are home. If we don't recognize the number, we let the answering machine deal with them.

After 9, we cut all phones off except one in the library so they can call at 3 in the morning and it won't bother us.

We can usually tell if the call is a telemarketer, we just tell them that whoever they are asking for isn't home. I use the junk mail to start a fire in my burn ring when I am burning up brush, leaves, and grass.

Mike favorite way to deal with phone telemarketers, is to say he's busy at this moment but if they would please give him their home number he'll gladly call them back later. Some break up laughing

You want to send a real message about Junk mail, glue the postage paid envelope to a "Brick".
The post office will look at you funny, but they have to take it. Do put your return address, see how quickly they take you off there mailing address.
It works.
