From the BBC News:

quote:
Victims of the sniper shootings in Washington DC and their families have settled a lawsuit they brought against a gun company and a gun dealer.

They had sued the two companies for negligent distribution of weapons.

Lawyers representing the victims' families described the settlement as historic. They believe it could change practices across the firearms industry.

Bull's Eye Shooter Supply, who sold the rifle used in the shootings, agreed to pay the families $2m.

Bushmaster Firearms, who made the gun, settled on a half-a-million dollar payout.

The deal with Bushmaster is the first time a gun manufacturer in the United States has agreed to pay damages for negligent distribution of weapons.

I'm trying to think of something to compare this to in order to illustrate how absurd this is, but I can't. You know why? Because there's no similar instance in which the same thing hasn't happened: "This is as ridiculous as the families of 9/11 victims suing the airlines for the terrorist attacks." No, that one's happened. "This is like a smoker suing the tobacco companies for their emphysema." No good; that one's real, too. "This is as dumb as suing a doctor for a birth defect in your kid that is completely outside the doctor's ability to prevent." Hell, John Edwards became a multi-millionaire using that one.

I'm tired of "victims" using the courts to plunder good people and companies that have nothing to do with what caused their misfortune.

I couldn't agree more. The problem is that our laws are created by lawyers for lawyers. I like what some neurosurgeons are doing. They simply refuse to operate on lawyers, because of the high cost of medical malpractice insurance. It would be nice if all doctors would decline to treat lawyers. Then maybe we would see some common sense return to the legal system.

Another thing that is really out of control, is the cost of medical treatment. Going up at double digit rates every year, the cost of personal medical insurance is putting more and more Americans into the uninsured category every day. This is in large part caused by the absurd prices charged by drug companies in our country. It's odd that they can sell the same drugs to other countries for a small percentage of what they charge Americans.

Greed has taken over this country, and common sense and decency have lost the battle.

I agree with everything both of you said but I dont know any way that it could be changed. Our country is no longer run by our peers, but by wealthy people that do not understand or care about the middle class or poor people. The people in this country should vote on EVERY law, raise's for polititans, polution controls, seat belt laws perscription availibility etc. It seems that the politicans chose which laws we can and can't vote on. Congress should not be able to vote themselves a raise WE should be able to control that. I smoke and every pack of cigarettes I buy has a warning on it, it seems that any one trying to sue the cigarette mfg's would be laughed at but not so. If all this stupid stuff continues we wont have doctors, just lawyers and stupid judges that allow all this to go on.

When are we going to go back to the time when every human being was expected to be accountable for their own actions?

If the lawyers get their way, no one will ever be accountable for anything. We will probably need legal approval to post on a website.

My late wife was an attorney and she always said "The more lawyers I meet the better I like my dog"

The guy who bilked people out of millions here in Cincinnati and got sentenced to do Federal time, but got to go on vacation first was in the news again today. His victims are suing WSAI because they aired his ads promising them 10 % every year, tax free, on their "investments". They claim they probably would not have fallen for it if they did not hear it on the radio, (Where EVERYTHING is true). The entire world is nuts.
