This is a real doll made by an artist named Simon Tyszko. Suicide Bomber Barbie conflates Western commodification with Palestinian desperation. Religious and capitalist dogmas struggle within Barbie’s idealised form, in an artwork of potent incongruity.

Tyszko’s work might be described as being in the tradition of the long lost art of agitprop. ‘Capitalism defeats dissent and revolution’ Tyszko says, ‘not through direct confrontation, but through commodification. It sells back at a profit the signs, styles and symbols of revolution.’

I'm not sure if I should find this hilarious or repulsive. Maybe both.

What do you think?

Nothing new. I taped an M-80 to my sisters Barbie back in the 60's. My sister returned fire with total destruction of my green Army men. Then Dad and Mom unleashed their WMD's (and they had 'em) and the battle was over with a truce and a sore butt) lol Jeff

Jeff - better on Barbie than a pet turtle! That's what a neighborhood kid of mine was trying to do when his older brother found him in the garage.

Marty I was always an animal lover. My neighborhood had one of them too. No for me Barbie was the enemy as requests for endless fashions and accessories were always granted. While my Army always ran into trouble with the appropriations committee. (had something to do with Dads barefeet stepping on bayonet wielding soldiers in the middle of the night) I just needed the reenforcement of a battalion of 'the Kneeling Soldier' with bazooka on shoulder to guarantee the safety and Victory of my fighting heroes! lol Jeff

Nope, Barbie is the all American girl. Certainly NOT a bomber.
Annie just picked up a couple of Barbie lounge kitties that look great with the little prowlers. That's an image I prefer.

Well, having served in Viet Nam AND Thailand...this sort of thing was commonplace...esp in dining halls...the gooks strapped bombs onto young children's (girls) legs in hopes of blowing up GIs...not a pretty sight--or memory! But, you did ask what I thought, didn't you??? Nuff said!!! ~Ken~

Actually, Ken, I was responding to Dr. Prowler's post. His nickname is Ken..as in Barbie and Ken. Sorry!
