I watched the flag pass by one day,
It fluttered in the breeze.

A young Marine saluted it,
And then he stood at ease..

I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd.

I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil
How many mothers' tears?

How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.

I heard the sound of Taps one night,
When everything was still,
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That Taps had meant "Amen,"

When a flag had draped a coffin.
Of a brother or a friend.

I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.

I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea

Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, freedom isn't free.

I'm very proud to be an American! But its embarrassing when some idiot soldiers make the whole country look bad by taking pictures of Iraqi prisoners being humiliated!

I'm so proud of 99.99 % of those kids in Iraq!

Unfortunenatly...I understand worse photos and details are going to be in the news soon? I'm just so disappointed, disgusted, angry with those behaviors..it's a foundation shaker for me...

The vast majority of our folks over there are as good as gold. I can't imagine what the rest were thinking: Hey, Louie, I'm gonna commit a war crime...get the camera!

Did you people already have "court-martial" marked in next month's dayplanner?

Look at the Idiot who gunned down a guy after a game at Wrigley park this week! Over a crosswalk dispute. Fan takes a miniture baseball bat to the SUV and breaks the mini bat over the drivers head! His passenger and friend get out and shoots him in the head!! Dead! What was he thinking about! 2 Cops in a patrol car were sitting there watching the whole thing happen! I'll never understand, never! Do people think about their actions before they do them! Lets put this on tape!!

I'm also sickened and embarrassed by the photos of Iraqi prisoners. The actions of a couple bad apples from the military, DoD contractors, CIA and DIA are certainly not reflective of our armed forces. I'm still damn proud of them and our country!

And I don't think we need Rush Limbaugh on the radio saying he thinks it's a pretty good thing, in the context of war, to have those prisoners humiliated and to have the photos published, because now the Arab world will know we're serious. Obviously he was never in the military!

Do not let the actions of a few tarnish the character of all the other military people serving our country and doing a very difficult job in the worst circumstances we cannot even imagine.

99.9% of the guys and gals that are there and in other hot spots are America's best. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers. A few idiots don't represent the fine men and women of the armed forces who lay their life on the line every day to protect our freedom (and our ability to own things like the Prowler). Semper Fi to all of them!
