Has anyone taken a raft trip down hrough the Grand Canyon?
We did it about 8 years ago and are considering doing it again.
If you did the trip, which company did you go with?

I have never done the Colorado, but I have done many rivers in the Mid-Atlantic and South.

Kayaked and rafted the river were the Atlanta Summer games was held. The Nantahala. I went to college near there. I was about an hour's drive from Gatlinburg, which hosted PTS last fall. Rafted the Chattooga a few times. This was where Deliverance was filmed. Class 3,4 & 5 rapids. No guys, I did not have to squeal like a pig! This was all mainly while I was in college.

Rafting is a blast! A real rush. Safe if done as a group and with experienced guides. If not respected, a river can bite. Don't be a hot dog like me. I took a kayak in rapids that I wasn't accomplished enough to maneuver and the result was a 70 stitch gash in my leg. I don't know about the Colorado, but the waters of the eastern rivers are extreme cold. Most are in the mountains and are fed by waters from reservoirs. The waters are released from the reservoirs by raising the gates, so the coldest water from the lake bottom is what you get.

I highly recommend doing it at least once in your life. I think it should be on everyone's must do list.

Another rafting tip.

Wear either water shoes (the tight fitting ones with flexible soles) or tightly laced atletic shoes to prevent stone bruises on the bottoms of your feet from walking on rocks on the river bottom.

Randy, the beginning of the trip is just below the dam. The water is EXTREMELY cold for the first 6 or 7 days and then gets a little warmer at the end. These rafts are huge compared to most river rafts. They are carrying 16 people and enough food for 16 people for 9 days. The food is in diamond plated steel boxes under the raft in the cold water. Beer and soda is in bags hung over the side and stays plenty cold. There is so much sand in the water that the cans become generic if left in the water too long. You don't know if it is 7 UP or Bud Light, no paint left on the aluminum. No tents, slept on the sand in a sleeping bag.
The rafts are about 3 or 4 feet above the water line. It is still a great time going thru the rapids. They have a small outboard motor on the raft, no paddling.
You don't do much walking in the water but you do get wet and need decent shoes.
I have done the Gaulley which has class 6 rapids. Did the Youghiogheny trip out of Ohiopyle, PA and got flipped out and needed disk surgery on my neck, 15 years ago. The Grand Canyon is not that dangerous in the much larger rafts.
A/C, Tami Faye, Sandy and I would like to do it again. Interested?

Ed.........Bob and I and some friends did a 96-mile (4 days, 3 nights) trip down the Colorado River (including Cataract Canyon) several years ago. We put in at Moab, UT and it ended as we entered Lake Powell. It was one of the best vacations we've ever had!! We used Sherri Griffith Expeditions out of Moab. They are the BEST! I chose them for several reasons, one being Disney uses them. I figured if they did, they had to be good.......and they ARE! I would do it again in a second!

Ok AC - you've got a little over four weeks to get in my good graces - starting now - GO!!! LOL

Ed - would love to go on a rafting trip - will have to wait at least until next year though since my vacation after the June event will be pretty much wasted - we really need to think about this though - would love it!!!

Marty: That was great!!! Loved your post! T

Tami Faye, you need to make reservations almost a year in advance, if it is still like it was back in the day. They are only allotted so many trips/passengers per year per company. Everything you take into the canyon you take out of the canyon. No garbage, no fires or firewood, castille soap so you do not pollute, etc. The National Park service is pretty serious about keeping it pristine. Allyour belongings have to fit inside a grocery bag. They give you a waterproof bag and an old ammo can for you camera, etc. Pack light.

Ed,

I went about 3 years ago and it was a lot of fun. Make sure you go when it is hot (June, July & Aug) because the Colorado river water temp is always about 60 degree.... feels good when the air temp is warm. I remember in the morning when it was still cool how shockingly cold the water felt and I'd hate to be wet & cold all day.

We used <A HREF="River Adventures" </A> they offer both rowing and motor boat trips. I enjoyed the motor boat trip because often time the river has many slow parts and motor comes in handy.

Read all about my adventure at my website:
Grand Canyon Trip

Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

The Colorado River is regulated by the dam at Lake Powell ..... the water level only rises and falls 2 feet each day.... so anytime of the year is good. Only 10% of the time the water is clear, mostly it's muddy.
