A good friend of mine has a son who will be getting his license this Sept. The young man is real sharp and very responsible. So responsible that he has worked and saved up about $5,000 for a car. His Dad told him he would match his savings, so there is a total of $10,000 for the purchase. His Dad asked me, knowing I have a Prowler, if a PT Cruiser would be a good first car for his son. He reasoned that it has the cool factor his son wants, he could probably get a pretty good used one within their budget and the car has enough power without putting too much power in the hands of an inexperienced driver. I told my friend that some of you have or have had PTs and may be a good source for advice. Please give me your candid opinions. Thanks in advance, Randy Cobb ------------------

my daughter and wife both have PT'sautos and non turbo. I think it would be a good choice for a 1st car My daughter is looking over my shoulder and reminded me that her PT is her 3rd car........1st being a `92 Mustang convertible...then a Ply. Breeze then her cruiser being her 1st NEW CAR that she bought on her own She also thinks it would be a good 1st car.

My son at college (GRROWLjr's brother) has my 2001 PT. I would say it's a perfect first car, especially at college - he's 6', fits fine, as well as 3 more 6-footers. It's small and nimble enough on the outside to get around and park, but big enough and flexible enough on the inside for hauling. I'd say it's an excellent choice. Only problem, we haven't flamed it yet - it's purple, and we wanted to add the orange flames for VA Tech.-GRROWL

My son got his PT while in college two years ago. His has a standard transmission. He still uses it and is very happy with it. Lately though, he has been talking about a Crossfire and keeping the PT as a second car.

We have two PTs and we like them. It is not a big car but no so small that you would tend to get more. It has dual airbags, also. That is a plus with young people, I would think. They are not underpowered but not really quick, either. Probably a fairly good first car for a young person. Of course what do I know, I am old.

I'm on my fourth PT.....the first three were company lease vehicles.........I love the PT so much, we bought one outright instead of taking the company lease vehicle. It is unique looking with lots of potential for mods. I have the Turbo and it's much faster than the other three were. It's easy to park and has a TON of cargo space....for just about anything from tool boxes to mountain bikes. Easy to wash and wax with a good warranty! I would highly recommend it as a first car!! ------------------ CJ - The One and Only 1999 Black - PPROWLR 2002 Deep Candy Red - CJPROWLN Classic/Beautiful - I'm referring to the Cat of course!

If the kid is like me and my friends I would recommend a Tank. Not to fast, 50 mph, and if he hits something he won't get hurt. Honestly I have nothing against a PT, but if it was my kid I would like a bigger car or SUV. Kids never think about Speed,Dying. I remember riding with a friend in a old valiant doing 110 with bald tires. Drag racing friends with my 1969 Lemans. Its a miracle me and my friends are still around today! I had a relative die in a small car. I'm not a big fan of them. JMO------------------

My son has a PT (auto) going on four years (June - 46K miles). He loves it. He's had one accident where air bag went off and the car had much less damage than other vehicle. So, I'd say it passed the crash test. One bad spark plug during this entire time... I'd recommend it for 1st car..It was his 1st car at age 17. ------------------

Randy,I have a GT 5spd. I'd say it's a good car for the money. The only thing I would point out is that resale vaules are down across the industry. Especially in it's market segment. If a lightly used PT was availble, I'd get that with an extended warentee. JMO

I bought my son a 1978 Mercury Grand Marquis for his first car, because I wanted him to have something relatively safe to drive. This was one of the last remaining dinosaurs. A year later he went off the freeway at 70MPH and over an embankment. He flipped the car end over end 3 times. There wasn't a straight panel left on the car, but he didn't have a scratch. I felt good about the choice of cars.

My military son was stationed in England a number of years ago. He had his brand new Neon over there. While in the process of moving to an apartment off base, he was hit broadside by a very large truck. It spun him around and the truck hit him again in the rear end of his car and with the truck shoved him head on into a tree. Wasn't any glass left in the Neon and the car was totaled, but the ambulance drivers from the base could not believe that he got out of the car and was sitting on the ground waiting for them to arrive. After a thorough examination at the base hospital, they found no internal or external injuries except for cuts from the glass and a few bruises from the seat belt. He was very lucky, but he attributes his survival from the quality of his Neon, his seatbelts and the air bags. Smaller cars can be safe cars, too!

My wife is now on her second PT, the first one she drove for three and a half years. She really loves the cars and did a few mods to it . . . enough to win a handful of awards at several car shows! We were recently rear ended by an uninsured motorist who forget to slow down for a red light. The car was totaled, but we escaped with only minor injuries. I would highly recommend a PT for your son, both as a SAFE car and a COOL one!
