While I don't doubt it, could someone please enlighten me as to how they know this was a scam?

A low starting bid on a car is fairly common to build interest. I think it would be a tremendous benefit to us all if we knew what tips folks off that as to which car(s) are scams.

Thanks in advance

Well, I also would like to know how to tell when it's a scam. I'm still looking to buy a Prowler and see some online at Ebay but like 20-30 people have already bid on it?

1. low buy if now price
2. ebay auctions based out of us
3. look at the feedback if they have bought and sold shoes and all of sudden they selling big ticket items..
4. restricted auctions
5. money order only for payment for deposit.

these are few things to look for and common sense.
if they have prowler for sale or whatever with no miles and asking way below market that would be a flag...

I agree with most of those however, I think there may be valid cases for #3 and 5.

Not being a regular eBay buyer/seller, I have listed a fair amount of things over the years that have ranged from $10 to $50000.

Also, since not a regular user, my only form of payments were cashier check, money order, or personal check. Didn't want to set up PayPal just for 1 or 2 sales.

Of course, sellers aren't the only ones that can muddy up the waters. I had my share of fakes that bid, won, then just disappeared into the woodwork or asked for some different pay method after they won (I clearly stated my only options).

I guess the best advice is to just be cautious with any seller and buyer.

eBay is a great tool but, only as good as those that use it.

I have an idea. What if we contact him and ask if he would do an even trade for a Prowler. Worth twice what he is asking, would be a lay down if he said NO!!!!

What's a "lay down"?

If a real sale, and the guy needs the cash, I doubt he'd trade for anything.

He has the car listed as a Shelby but only lists the Mustang VIN number. Ask him for the shelby vin number.

Mustang VIN he lists is 7T02S143461
which decodes as

7 last digit of the model year. 1967
T assembly plant Metuchen (Germany?)
02 body serial code 2 door fastback(bucket seats)
S engine code 390 4 barrel
143461 consective unit number

Shelbys went straight from the factory to Shelby for conversion. I have never heard of any overseas mustangs coming back to be converted. I believe all Shelbys were from U.S. assembly plants.

He also lists it as a numbers matching 428 car.
From the VIN number you can tell it was a 390.

Too many lies here for it not to be a scam.
If anyone gets a shelby Vin from him I can also decode that.

Buyers beware.

Very funny Alley Cat!!!! Jim and I are narrowing it down but still hoping for that win this month of the Prowler. We know what we don't want so far. Our favorites as far as color is the burnt orange or the Mulholland Blue for sure. I'm still waiting also for Jim to sell his Harley.

FYI

A "lay down" is a person(s) who succumb to what ever a salesperson wants to sell them. If you believe all the BS, sign on the bottom line, and pay for it,,,,,,you are a "lay down". Also known in the sales trade as a piece of "cake",,,,,or "birthday cake".

You know you paid too much and are a "lay down" when the salesperson asks you after the sale,,,,,,,,,,,,,do you have a brother?

I guess I shouldn't be explaining this, but I don't sell anything anymore.

Another favorite of mine:
Merchandising - getting the customer to buy what YOU want to sell them.
