L.A. Laker Shaq has been sidelined for a one game suspension for throwing out a couple of F bombs during a live TV interview. This will cost the big guy his one game salary of $275,000. Gheezzz, I'm not sure whether he can afford it? I think it was once figured that he makes $57 per second, whether he is in the game or on the bench. Love this game.

The problem is that the fans DEMAND winning teams and when teams don't win, the fans don't pay to go to the games. The sports agents know this and go after the deep pockets of the franchises. Of course the exception is Denver, where they sell out no matter what the "Donkos" are doing, but those fans are suffering from lack of oxygen!!! We often hear the sob story that an athlete's playing career is limited to 5 -10 years and they need to make more money. That's bull$#%&. Why do they have to be multi-millionaires when they leave sports? Why can't they get a job working like everyone else? Because we've spoiled them. It would be refreshing if the owners in the NBA, NFL or MLB told athletes they would be paid $250,000 per year. And when the athletes complained, the owners would tell them to go get another job if they didn't like it. I played football when I was younger and I was in great shape, but I don't see why these people need to be millionaires... This message has been edited by Bob Miller on 02-03-2004 at 09:16 AM

Are these guys overpaid? Or are you and I underpaid? I like the idea of companies giving a greater share of their profits to the people actually doing the work. It really sucks when the big boys are making multi-millions and paying you minimum wage, and then telling you when you complain, to go find work elsewhere. If only this concept would catch on in the REAL business world!

I like the system the way it is. It is the free market at work. Athletes are worth every penny they get. Do you know why that is? Because someone is willing to pay them that. That is precisely what determines something is worth. The folks that own these sports teams are all filthy rich and they dont get that way by being stupid. They dont pay people more than they are worth. Besides, salaries will continue to rise until fans decide the prices are too high. ------------------ Just a prowler owner wannabe...but not for long.

The whole sports thing is a big con. I just don't get it.In Houston, Bud Adams (w/ his Oilers) wanted to raise the roof of the Astrodome to seat another 10,000 folks. This would have cost the city something like $200 million. The city said no and told him to take a hike. O.K., I'm on board so far. Then, they decide to build a totally separate stadium for the Astros. Cost, $500 million. Then they decide to build a new football stadium (we had no team) in order to hopefully attract a team. Cost, $700 million. Then the Rockets chimed in for their new stadium. Cost $400 million. Now to top of this rosey scenario, they still owed $190 million for the last improvements to the Astrodome (which no one is using now). Apparently, in city government, math is not a prerequisite. But it all does bring in alot of seasonal jobs, if you sell hot dogs or sling peanuts..... I am so glad I no longer live in Harris county.
