In his book, Sled Driver, SR-71 Blackbird pilot Brian Shul writes: "I'll
always remember a certain radio exchange that occurred one day as Walt (my
backseater) and I were screaming across Southern California 13 miles high.
We were monitoring various radio transmissions from other aircraft as we
entered Los Angeles airspace. Though they didn't really control us, they
did monitor our movement across their scope.
I heard a Cessna ask for a readout of its groundspeed."
"90 knots" Center replied.
"Moments later, a Twin Beech required the same."
"120 knots," Center answered.
We weren't the only ones proud of our groundspeed that day as almost
instantly an F-18 smugly transmitted, 'Ah, Center, Dusty 52 requests
groundspeed readout.'
There was a slight pause, then the response, "525 knots on the ground,
Dusty."
"Another silent pause. As I was thinking to myself how ripe a situation
this was, I heard a familiar click of a radio transmission coming from my
backseater. It was at that precise moment I realized Walt and I had become
a real crew, for we were both thinking in unison." "Center, Aspen 20, you
got a groundspeed readout for us?"
There was a longer than normal pause .... "Aspen, I show 1,742 knots"
No further inquiries were heard on that frequency.

We live in an area close to several military installations.
We see the black hawks, the cobras (anywhere from 1-10 in formation), Nasa trainers, various F-15/16's. It's always a thrill watching them.

Night before last was a real treat. Me and the wife were walking the dog when the show stated. 4 F-16's were headed back to their base when 2 of them decided to play in a mock firefight. It was at dusk so you could just make out the plane but, could see the heat out of the back of the engines. They started playing around 7-10000 feet over our house and were going pretty quick till the first one kicked on the afterburners. You could see the tail section opening wide, the flames shooting out 5-10 feet behind the jet and the sound was deafening. In doing this, that jet took off like a rocket and was gone from sight almost immediately. The second joined persuit doing the same.
They would do this for a few seconds then cut them off and you could hear a loud pop and the flames would disappear from the tail end of the jets.

On one pass over our home, they both went vertical, kicked em on again, and must have gone up to 80000 feet before popping them off. What an awesome show of power!!!!!!!!!!!! The show lasted about 5 minutes and was incredible to watch.

Not me. Don't think I could have ever handled anything like that.

Here's a cool picture, you may have seen before. I actually witnessed this once on the Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier, when an F-16 did a low fly-by. Just like this picture, the moisture in the air actually builds up in front of the plane, until the plane breaks through it as it breaks the sound barrier. It is way cool to watch.
